The ease of obtaining a medical marijuana recommendation which can be done on-line from physicians
specializing in writing such recommendations coupled with the legalization of recreational marijuana use is
likely to increase the number of such complaints and the inability of landlords and managers to prohibit the
usage.
The legalization of marijuana has also led to the development of cannabis products that do not require smoking,
thus eliminating the likelihood of secondhand smoke. The products include topical skin creams or ointments,
sublingual mints or strips designed to be held under the tongue or in the cheek, tincture—a liquid that can be
held under the tongue, and edibles. (p.N17 in the linked document from the SF Chronicle)
While not as familiar as smoking a joint, these other means of ingestion can provide the health benefits without
polluting the air quality of the building and possibly harming neighbors and smoke damaging walls and
carpeting. The patients may need to experiment with the products to determine the best dosage and medium but
this is a small inconvenience compared to the smoke pollution.
Sincerely,
Serena
Serena Chen
Public Health Policy Consultant
2
