Ms. MicheloHri said that in driving the area, her eye was drawn to the upper
portion of the building.

Ms. Ayala said if you have 50 vendors in one location, you should be able to
come up with something. She would be more than happy to help them come up with
some ideas for advertising, but there arc many things that you can do. It is important that
people know where your business is located and that you have some way to identify that
you are an antique business. She is not one who is going to be in favor of putting this
many signs, as Rynick has, that can attract attention. She is not really sold on coming
here and telling us what's wrong with everybody's sign. Those complaints could be
lunged in to the Code Enforcement Officer and the Code Enforcement Officer would go
out to investigate.

Ms. Derails said that what has been consistent policy of the Council in the past
has been to minimize signage. She does want people to be able to find the business, but
then there is the signage for advertising. That is why she does not feel comfortable
without seeing exactly what is being proposed, to make sure the purpose is to solve a
problem that people can find the business, rather than to solve an advertising problem.
She really does not want to solve an advertising problem with signage, and that was her
reason for wanting to see more. She said she would be happy to consider something that
she could really get a better idea of, but she does not really have a good idea after looking
at these prints. It is a monmnent sign that is being proposed, but there is no design.

Ms. Miehelotti asked Mr. Swift if the monument sign would be along with the
other tenant signs, like we have done in other areas of retail, where it becomes the main
entrance, or where there is predominance given to the dominant user. If that was so, do
they have any desire to have something like that on Stanley Boulevard where there would
be the antique monument sign, where signage would be taken away from the California
side? Are the other tenants in favor of doing that? She does not have an idea if they are
in favor of reduced signage. She is where Ms. Dcrmis is, and really would like to see a
proposal with smaller signs on the sides of the building and the whole comprehensivc
thing.

Mr. Swift said he did not know what the other businesses would like. This
applicant wanted its own monument sign and that is what we have been referring to.

Ms. Ayala said there are certain regulations in place that staff' is to enforce and
that we are going to open a can of worms because anyone who doesn't get the signage
that they particularly want, and she is sure there are many businesses out there that have
been denied certain signage, are going to say, "Let's take it to the City Council," because
you have that group of designers up there and they are going to probably approve things
one by one. She does not want to get into that line of business. She said she likes to set
policy and let staff enforce it.

Pleasanton city council 33 06/20/00
Minutes
