Commissioner Maas suggested that the issue be brought up with Council to determine if
it was a priority with the City.
Bernal Propertv Design Competition
Commissioner Kameny noted that the Bernal Property Design Competition referenced a
Planning Commission hearing at 8:30 p.m. on June 9, 2004.
Chairperson Roberts believed that was a mistake.
Mr. Iserson noted that he did not initiate that notice and had not seen the notice before.
He noted that the Youth Commission would meet that evening as well and that perhaps
they would attend after that meeting.
Sidebars During Planning Commission Meetings
Chairperson Roberts noted that she had attended a session at the Planners Institute that
addressed how to run a meeting. She noted that sidebars had been discussed, and she
believed that was an issue that was relevant to the City's Planning Commission meetings.
She noted that sidebars were not beneficial to the audience, and that when
Commissioners talked with each other off-mike, the audience did not know what was
_ being discussed. She noted that sidebars often occurred when Commissioners were
trying to locate a map or other feature of the staff report but that it should be explained to
the audience. She noted that another issue was when Commissioners speak to a member
of the audience individually, it could be off-putting to an applicant and may give the
impression that special attention was being given that person. She suggested that she had
not noticed that occurrence but added that the Commissioners should be careful during
the recess.
Commissioner Kameny noted that City Council members also spoke with members of the
audience.
Timeliness of Commission Mail
Commissioner Kameny noted that he had intended to attend the "Vision Pleasanton"
breakfast, but that by the time his packet arrived the RSVP deadline had passed. He
suggested that time-sensitive items be mailed to Commissioners.
General Plan Update/Political Action Committee
Commissioner Arkin noted that it was a Political Action Committee that addressed eight
policies that constituted its idea of what the General Plan should be. He noted that the
Committee would raise funds for political candidates to support the alternate General
Plan, which he believed had been developed out of the public eye.
PLANNING COMMISSION MINUTES May 26, 2004 Page 13 of 15
