Recreation volunteers work in sports and aquatics as lifeguards and coaches.
Overall, volunteers provide the equivalent of 13 FTE (full-time equivalent)
employees.
Volunteers are used strategically to support staff in providing excellent programs and
services, but professional staff are still needed in each area. For example, paid staff
are required to manage library account processes and the materials check-in and
check-out for community members using an Integrated Library System (ILS)
software that contains privacy -protected information about library cardholders,
including their personal data and library records of their borrowing history and fees
paid. Library records are protected under California State law and may only be
accessed by library staff to perform their job duties. In addition, librarians plan
programs such as storytimes, literacy/ESL services, and PUSD collaborative
programs using structural frameworks that they receive during their Master's degree
programs and/or on-the-job training over an equivalent number of years in libraries.
Police Deaartment
The Police Department's Volunteers in Police Services (VIPS) program was
established in 2001 and currently has 20 volunteers. The VIPS support the goals
and objectives of the department by developing a partnership between the
department and the Pleasanton community. This partnership increases awareness
in the community and helps to reduce crime and improve the quality of life. Since
2002, VIPS have volunteered more than 105,000 hours. Currently, the department
has 14 patrol volunteers, 4 administrative volunteers, a sketch artist and a police
chaplain. While these are all non -sworn positions, VIPS receive initial and on-going
training relative to their assignments.
The typical duties of a patrol volunteer include vacation checks, traffic control, crime
scene logs and scene security, animal calls, special events (such as downtown
events, cone with a cop, national night out), parking enforcement, wildlife transport
and shopping cart abatement. Administrative volunteers perform a wide variety of
duties such as financial data entry for our business services unit, filing, assisting the
records unit by performing data entry for citations, airport runs, supporting the
Citizen's Academy, Live scan and special projects.
Livermore -Pleasanton Fire Department (LPFD)
The LPFD relies heavily on volunteers to deliver routine internal and external
services and provide preparedness and resiliency in response to a large-scale
emergency/disaster. The LPFD volunteer roster fluctuates but typically there are
around 100 volunteers. These include the Community Emergency Response Team
(CERT), Reserve Firefighters, Firefighting Explorer Scouts, administrative
volunteers, and fire science college volunteers. Thousands of hours are donated
annually. Without volunteers, many services that the LPFD provides would either
come at significant cost or be impossible; one example is the annual Fire Safety
Expo, which is staffed mostly by volunteers.
2 of 5
