THE CITY OF
:111 1
uw
tll
PLEASANTON.
MEMORANDUM
Date: April 4, 2025
To: Mayor and City Council
From: Gerry Beaudin, City Manager 66
Subject: Top FAQs about Potential Budget Reductions
1. Can sponsorships cover the costs of programs and services?
The City Council approved the City's first sponsorship policy at its February 4,
2025, meeting. The policy considers a wide range of opportunities and provides
guidance on soliciting sponsorships of financial and in-kind support from
businesses, organizations, and private individuals.
Under the agreement, sponsorships would be available in three broad categories:
events and program sponsorship for City -organized or co -organized events; project
sponsorship of a specific City -sanctioned project such as a large-scale capital
project); and site sponsorship for a specific City facility, amenity, or feature
including benches, picnic tables, and trees. Any revenue generated through event
or program sponsorships is expected to contribute directly to offsetting event or
program costs to the City.
Staff is already suggesting ideas and pursuing sponsorship opportunities; however,
given that the policy was only recently adopted, implementing a sponsorship and
beginning to collect revenue will take some time.
2. Can the City use volunteers instead of paid staff?
The City does use volunteers to help deliver services to the community. Several
examples of the use of volunteers are provided below.
Library and Recreation
The Library and Recreation Department utilizes over 700 volunteers each year
who provide more than 27,000 hours of service. For example, Firehouse Arts
Center and Harrington Art Gallery volunteers greet patrons, check tickets, and
answer questions. Senior Center volunteers facilitate programs and support special
events. Library volunteers work on a variety of programs, including Kid Power,
Booklegger, literacy, Paws to Read, and Friends of the Pleasanton Library.
1 of 5
