12 C):1 <br />standing that Livermore intended to.advance 6500.009 Alameda $900.00 or thereabouts, <br />Berkeley $1000. and other amounts from San Leandro and Hayward. He reported that <br />each community-_was being asked to do something toward accummulating funds sufficient <br />to carry on the work. Councilman Madsen had some questions to ask,Councilman <br />Amaral with regards to what had been accomplished this year. `the Clerk then discussed <br />the matter and made suggestions concerning an appropriation, viz., that same not <br />exceed $100.00. Councilman Madsen opposed the matter stating that he was willing <br />to do something locally providing a local organization undertook to advertise the <br />community. His remarks brought forth further remarks from Councilman Amaral who <br />went into the matter of,the work of the organization a little more fully. Attorney <br />Nilson discussed the letter with the Council and stated that the matter was not <br />fully set forth and that the communication did not state the purpose for which the <br />money was.going to be used and accordingly there was nothing in the letter that the <br />Council could act upon. He suggested that if anything -was to be done the Council <br />should have advice as to what was being contemplated and to what ,end the expenditure <br />of funds would be directed. Accordingly, it was ordered that the Clerk should write <br />to the committee and solicit from them information with regards to what was being <br />contemplated for 1938 and with reference to the benefits to be derived, from such <br />a campaign. <br />November 10th- Urs. Christine Olesen. Filed. <br />November 12th -- Pacific Gas & Electric Co, to be further considered at the <br />January 3d meeting. <br />November 22nd -- Pacific Telephone & Telegraph Company. Filed. <br />December 6th -- -John J. Oneil., The Clerk was instructed to write to Mr. Oneil <br />and to advise him that there were no objections from the Council <br />concerning the removal of the trees. The Clerk was ordered to <br />advise Mr. Oneil to the affect that planting trees on the rail- <br />road property was a matter of concern between he and the Railroad <br />and that he whould correspond with the Railroad company in regards <br />to same. <br />The Clerk took the occasion to bring before the Council a communication from <br />the Woman's Improvement Club included at the November let meeting -and vhich had been <br />replied to. The Clerk informed the Council that the committee from the �ioman's <br />Improvement Club wished definite information with regards to the amount of money <br />the Town would spend for trees and approximately the number of trees that would <br />be planted. He advised of a conversation with Mrs. Mary Stovall, chairman of the <br />committee. Mr. Rodrigues likewise spoke on the matter and informed the Council <br />with reference to the desires of the Club. The Clerk was instructed to advise <br />the Woman's Improvement Club that the municipality would spend in the neighborhood <br />of $40.00 for trees and the work of setting them out would be taken care of at an <br />early date.. <br />Miss Winifred Doucette and Robert Casterson appeared for the 411 Club of Pleasanton <br />with respect to the town donating a tree to be planted in memory of Ole Olesen, <br />deceased councilman,,in the "Grove of Memory" at the high school in January, the <br />trees to be set out as part of the tree:�planting ceremony of the Club for-that time. <br />The Council was of the opinion that the 4H Club should solicit an expression from <br />Mrs. Oleseri with reference to the tree to be selected feeling that probably Mr. <br />Olesen had preference in the matter. The Council had no objection to procuring <br />the tree after the proper decision had been made. <br />Councilman Madsen of the Public Utilities Committee and Councilman Rivolta of <br />the Finance Committee both reported progress with the activities of their departments. <br />Councilman Amaral of the Laws and Judiciary Committee brought to the attention <br />of the Council that complaints must be registered in re. Liquor licenses to be <br />issued as of January 1st. He stated that the matter Would be heard before the <br />State Board of Equalization prior to the expiration of the licenses and if anything <br />was to be done that it should be attended to at an early date. Councilman Madsen <br />queried Councilman fima.ral with regards to the standing of licenses in respect to <br />restaurants. Councilman Amaral advised that in incorporated areas,the matter was <br />under the jurisdiction of the City Council who were depended upon to act on the <br />matter. Mn connection with the unincorporated areas the State Board of Equalization <br />took up the matter. <br />Under old and unfinished business the matter of the street lights was brought <br />up and the Clerk advised that on two occasions he discussed the matter with Mr. <br />Saunders, manager of the local territory and that a report was being awaited. In <br />connection with the cleaning and laundry license, Mayor Orloff considered that the <br />matter should be gone into very thoroughly before anything was attended to.. Council - <br />man Amaral stated that he had consulted with the City Attorney, The Clerk and the <br />Chief of Police with regards the practical thing to do and that he was not.of a <br />definite opinion at this time. Attorney Nilson spoke with reference to the matter <br />as regards the license charged those charged for in town and those .outside of town, <br />and he thought the matter might be contested and that probably it ^,would not hold <br />if' the difference between the two was too great. He stated that he did not know <br />what could be done at this time. Councilman Madsen queried Mr. Costedoate, who <br />was present at the meeting, with reference to the matter and particularly in regards <br />to the equipment that he had on hand in taking care of the cleaning business. <br />Mr,:-,Costedoat advised that at the present time he was only picking up cleaning as <br />he did not have any equipment on hand to take care of the work. It -was decided to. <br />allow the matter to 'rest for the time being. <br />
