1208 <br />feet should be available for fire fighting purposes and he queried Mr. Letham with <br />regards to what he thought the department should have.. Mr. Letham advised that if the <br />Council would purchase an additional 500 feet of 2-- inch hose that he thought that same <br />would be sufficient, thus permitting the department to have in the neighborhood of <br />1800 feet of good hose for all purposes. Accordingly, the matter was referred to the <br />Council and there was no objections to 500 feet being procured from the American Rubber <br />Company at ,a price approximately $1.25 per foot. Mr. Henderson of the American Rubber <br />Company was present at the meeting and he explainted to the council certain matters-in <br />connection with the hose and the various grades and prices. Also he advised that he did <br />not anticipate .that there' would be any raise in price and also that no special prices <br />were quoted on account of quantity bought. He also showed smaples of the various hose <br />sold by his company. <br />May 3d Pleasanton'Fire Department. On motion of Councilman Riyoltg, seconded by Councilman <br />Amaral and with all the Councilmen in favor of same, the council vient on record as being <br />willing to meet the demand of the department and nay to it the $240.00 due. At the conclusion <br />of same, Councilman Amaral: queried Mr. Silver with regards to the amount of funds in <br />the treasury of the Fire Department. Mr. Silver advised that there was approximately <br />0600.00 in the treasury and that a separate account was kept of the funds of the Pleasanton <br />Fire Patrol. <br />Councilman Madsen of the Public Utilities Committee brought up conditions at the <br />Standard Cheese Corporation plant on north Main Street, stating that of-reeent date the <br />company had closed its sumps and that cheese whey was being allowed to run into the sewer. <br />He reported that he had visited the premises and called the company officials attention <br />to same, but that the condition was continuing, and use of the drains discontinued. <br />He stated that the condition there was very much the same as it was some years ago and <br />that what was taking place was in direct violation of understandings had between the <br />City Council and the company. After a- short discussion it was ordered that the Clerk <br />should prepare a letter to the corporation directing'its attention to the violation now <br />in progress and'advisingg them to discontinue same immediately. The Chief of Police <br />was to personally deliver the letter to the plant. <br />Councilman Amaral of the Laws and Judiciary Committee reported that the resusitator <br />owned by the municipality was recently found-to be in need of repairs. The company was <br />notified and the ap aratus taken to Oakland for examination and a temporary one left in its <br />place. Councilman �maral reported that the resusitator would have to be overhauled at the <br />company's plant in the south and would cost about $30.00 plus freight.. Also that it could <br />be brought up to-date for a total of $70.00 plus freight, whereas if new equipment was <br />procured it would cost in the neighborhood of $425.00. It was ordered that the apparatus <br />should be modernized'and that the work receive:immediate attention. Councilman Amaral <br />also brought up the matter of the garbage disposal and the difficulties encountered with <br />Peter Zunino of „recent- date on account of his drinking etc. Also that he had been <br />recently fined 4150.00 and that he had been absent from the community for the past week <br />during which the garbage within the municipality had been allowed to accumulate, about <br />which many- 'bomp,"Laints had been heard. Councilman Amaral stated that Mr: Zunino's eldest <br />son, Domingo, had asked that the business be- turned over to him and the.•privileges formerly <br />accorded his father be taken up and.extended to him. He advised thathe would be will- <br />ing to do the right thing and that the municipality would not encounter any further <br />difficulty if he was allowed to handle the business. After a short discussion on the <br />matter it was ordered that Mr. Domingo Zunino be allowed to proceed. Councilman Amaral <br />queried Attorney Nilson with regards to the legal status of notifying,Mr. Peter Zunino <br />and Mr. Nilson advised that it was within the jurisdiction of the council to take up <br />the privileges that had been extended to Mr. Peter Zunino and turn same over to his <br />son and that the proper notification of same should go to the former. Mr. Nilson also <br />stated that he understood that Mr. Peter Zunino had bought out the garbage business <br />from the late Steve Adamian, and that it might be well to allow Domingo Zunino to proceed <br />with the business in preference to someone else. The Clerk was instructed to write Mr. <br />Peter Zunino accordingly. .Councilman Amaral then spoke with reference to the special <br />officer needed for traffic etc. and stated that since the matter was pending numerous <br />applicants had applied to him'for this part time employment., There was some discussion <br />among the Councilmen with regards the matter and Councilman Olesen felt that an officer <br />for one or two days a week might be sufficient. MayorOrlo:ff remarked with regards to <br />what had taken place some years ago when Messrs. Van Patten and Radbruch had assisted the <br />municipality. It was decided that Councilman Amaral be privileged to try and locate a <br />suitable person for the position, same to serve at the pleasure of the council. The <br />matter of compensation for services rendered was not determined, although some discussion <br />followed with regards to what should be done. <br />Councilman Olesen of the Street and Building Committee reported that the tree in front <br />of the First National Bank would shortly be-rtemoved. He also brought up the matter of the <br />annual Cleanup Week and it was decided that same should be for the period Saturday, May <br />22nd to conclude Saturday, May 29th, and that the municipality should give the usual <br />co- operation with regards to the disposal of dry grass etc. Councilman Olesen qa eried <br />Attorney Nilson with reference to the= 8nfathern- Pacific matter. Mr. Nilson reported that <br />he had queried the S.P. with regards to the agreement and that he had spoken to the <br />Southern Pacific Attorney with regards to same and it was decided that the agreement should <br />be'redrafted since originally it had been prepared to included right -of -ways etc. He also <br />dtated that a representative of the company had lately called upon him with regards to <br />same after which he had phoned the attorney in San Francisco. He further stated that in <br />all probability. the redrafted agreement' would be received during the week and recommended <br />that a special session be called on Monday evening, May 10th to consider same. Councilman <br />Olesen brought to the attention of the council certain improvements which had been <br />requested by Judge Gale of the city court with reference to the court room. Mr. Gale <br />asked that the desk and certain chairs be painted and a platform be fixed necessitating <br />an expense of some 030.00. Also that new window blinds etc. be procured, probably at a <br />cost of some $35.00. Councilman Olesen stated that the court room used by Mr. Gale and <br />rented by the county had never cost the city anything and accordingly the?i;ipality <br />should take care of Mr. Gale's request since it had been the first to be received by him <br />in a long time. Councilman Amaral did not have any objection to the request being granted <br />but he pointed out that the 8ity Hall was available for the use of the judge and the <br />fact that he used the county court room was because it was handier for'him. <br />Councilman Rivolta- of the finance committee had nothing in particular to report. <br />io- <br />
