August 4, 1983

HONORABLE CITY COUNCIL
Pleasanton, California

Report on Storm Damages in Kottinger Park

Members of the Council:

Backqround

This past winter there was considerable damage done to Kottinger Park
due to the intense rainstorms. The areas of the park most severely
damaged by the rains are bounded by Bernal (Pico) and Adams Way.
Portions of the.asphalt concrete pathway which meander throughout
the park have been damaged when slides occurred on some hillsides.
The pathway in one section has separated by 12'-14' vertically.

Trees have been displaced and undermined. The creekbed that runs
through Kottinger Park has been lowered due to erosion by approximately
4'-6' in some areas, while in others it has risen 2'-3' The dirt
under outfalls of existing storm pipelines that are located in various
areas in the creek has eroded away thereby creating drops of 4-5 feet.
The erosion has caused the storm pipelines to fill with debris and
rocks, thereby restricting the flow.

There are approximately 20 irrigation lines that cross the creekbed
at right angles. A few of the lines are now exposed and have been
temporarily repaired by the Parks Department. The other irrigation
lines that are buried may be broken due to the shift of the terrain.
It will be impossible to know the extent of the damage until all the
lines have been exposed and checked for cracks or displacement.

Work to be Done

The following work should be done prior to the beginning of the
rainy season:

Remove the trees that have been undermined by last winter's heavy
rains, both ~long the creek and within the slide area.

SR 83:313
