on station-to-station, station-to-trunk, trunk-to-trunk, trunk-
to-station, and all console functions are also performed.
Features of the CENTREX are tested on a per-station and per-
trunk basis.

CENTRAL OFFICE CENTREX DESIGN BASED ON PROVEN TECHNOLOGY
Reliability begins with a design based on sound, proven
technology. The CENTREX uses Bell Telephone Laboratories
technologies that its engineers have designed in which optimum
reliability is a proven standard. Types of Central Office
CENTREX Systems have been in operation for over twenty (20)
years. Beyond this standard, options are designed to extend
system reliability. Part of designing for reliability is
designing the most cost-effective optimum system configuration
for each customer. Any additional cost of redundancy is voided
with a Central Office CENTREX System as the CTX switching
mechanism is intricately tied to the overall Central Office
operations at no additional charge to the customer. Each
Central Office is equipped with its own uninterruptable power
source which includes battery and diesel operated generator
capabilities.

SELF MAINTENANCE
In the Central Office, a CENTREX spends a lot of time checking
its own health. Its control program regularly runs preventive
maintenance routines and diagnostic tests while continuing to
process calls.

The system reports the results of its maintenance activity
through status indicator, alamrs, and internal data logging.
Visual status indicators and alarms on a Central Office alarm
panel and on the customer's console identify failures quickly.

If a failure cannot be corrected or circumvented by the CTX
system, CENTREX generated records that will identify the
problem. If the problem cannot be cleared in the Central
Office, a maintenance person can be dispatched to the
customer's site with information that will directly assist in
trouble correction.

CONTINUING CENTRAL OFFICE CENTREX DESIGN
Design does not end with manufacturing. It is part of a
continuing process of product evaluation and response to
evaluation. Data is continually collected from factory testing
and field investigation, and analyzed in relation to design
specification. Where product performance can be improved at
reasonable cost, design refinements are made.

Designing for reliability is an essential part - but only a
part - of the reliability structure of the CENTREX. After
design, stringent manufacturing standards ensure that the
designed excellence of CENTREX is faithfully produced.

INSTALLATION TESTING
Trained Pacific Telephone and/or Western Electric Company
