Product - CENTREX is a Central Offide-based telecommunications
system that is presently used by some of the largest and most
demanding customers of Pacific Telephone. Such customers chose
CENTREX because of its inherent efficiency, dependability and
flexibility.

1. Features - See Section XI.

Reliability - Since CENTREX hardware and software is situated
inside the Central Office, the system remains under continuous
and immediate supervision by Pacific Telephone personnel. All
routine preventative and diagnostic maintenance is handled
seven days a week, twenty-four hours a day. This is one factor
which contributes to Centrex's low repair rate, which is at
least one-half that of t~e other systems sold in California.
Repair rate is measured by trouble rate per one hundred
stations. Uninterrupted Power Source is assured by the Central
Office's back-up power: battery and diesel generator
capability.

Flexibility -CENTREX System features can be modified quickly
without capital investment and station growth is only limited
by the Central Office capacity which, in most cases, far
exceeds that of premises equipment. The customer is protected
from obsolescence because CENTREX is the property of Pacific
Telephone and keeping the equipment current is its responsi-
bility. As stated by R. E. Scharman, Pacific Telephone Vice
President, "Pacific Telephone stands totally committed to the
maintenance and further enhancement of CENTREX service.", which
means the customer will have the benefit of new technology
without the burden of capital investment required to continual-
ly update facilities.

Aesthetics - CENTREX switching equipment is located in Pacific
Telephone's premises, which means that the customer may reclaim
most of their present switching rooms. The customer also saves
by eliminating the need for expensive, dedicated environmental
controls.

Product Volume
I. Traffic Capacity - A single in and out talking path per CENTREX
lines.

Growth Capability - Growth is only limited by Central Office
capacity which, in most cases, far exceeds that of premise
equipment.

Service
1. Protection to City - All guarantees of quality assurance
relative to the performance of the CENTREX system proposed in
this RFP are backed bE Pacific Telephone and Telegraph Company
and its manufacturing arm, the Western Electric Company.
Pacific Telephone service includes preventative and remedial
maintenance for the Centrex System for the life of the service
provided.
