SECTION 3

SANITARY SEWER SYSTEMS

3-01 General:

Sanitary sewer systems shall generally be designed on the
basis of criteria established in this section and subject to
final determinations and approval of the City Engineer.

3-02 Flow Calculations:

Sewer lines shall be classified as service laterals, main
sewers, interceptor sewers and trunk sewers as defined in
Appendix "D" and shall be designed for flows determined ,as
follows:

a)

Residential Service Areas: Sewers shall be designed
for the density allowed by proposed General Plan
use or for existing density, whichever is greater,
considering the average family unit as 3.2 persons per
family with an average per capita flow per day of
100 gallons including allowance for infiltration.
Lines shall be designed using peaking factors of
2.00 for mains, 1.70 for interceptors and 1.40 for
trunk sewers. (Peak design flows are therefore
repectively 200, 170, and 140 gallons per day per
capita).

b)

Commercial Service Areas: Sewers shall be designed for
actual flow or an equivalent flow assuming a residential
density of 4 family units per acre, whichever is greater.
Peaking factors shall be the same as for residential
service areas. (Peak design flows using equivalent flow
are therefore, repectively, 2260 gpd/acre, 2176 gpd/acre
and 1792 gpd/acre).

c)

Industrial Service Areas: Sewers shall be designed for
actual flow or an equivalent flow assuming a residential
density of 6 family units per acre, whichever is greater.
Peaking factors shall be the same as for residential
service areas. (Peak design flows using equivalent flow
are therefore, repectively, 3840 gpd/acre, 3264 gpd/acre
and 2688 gpd/acre).

d)

Schools: Sewers shall be designed on the basis of 15
gpd/capita for elementary schools and 30 gpd/capita for
high schools. Peaking factors shall be the same as for
r~idential areas. (Peak design flows are therefore,
repectively, 35 gpd/capita, 25 gpd/capita, and 21 gpd/capita
for elementary schools, and 60 gpd/capita, 51 gpd/capita
and 42 gpd/capita for high schools.

3.1
