accommodating parking, encouraging the removal or improving the existing railroad exhibit, and
adding attractive entrances to the commercial azea.
Downtown Area Arroyo Del Valle
This azea was identified and shown in its current condition. The task force has agreed that the main uses
of this azea should be to accommodate the trail for bikers, walkers, and equestrians. The goals for
improvement include improving the access and maintaining the azea's natural chazacteristics.
Bridee at Main Street over the Arroyo
This azea was also identified in its current condition. The task force has agreed that the bridge should be
used for auto, pedestrian, and bicycle circulation. The goals for improving the bridge should include
making it a major gateway for the downtown azea. In addition, any improvements to the bridge should
increase its civic and aesthetic quality and complement existing downtown improvements.
Main Street Green
This azea was identified and its existing conditions were shown. The task force has agreed that it should
provide a main access point to the Arroyo. They also feel it is a good pazk for walking and picnicking.
The goals for the project are to enlazge the site, provide handicapped entrances, and to maximum the
exposure to the Arroyo. In addition, they feel it would be a good location for a future art piece.
Downtown Square
Mr. Larson noted that two possible locations aze being considered for this project, and he showed slides
of the two proposed sites. One is adjacent to Round Table Pizza; the other is at Deans/Kids Are People,
Too. The task force has agreed to use the proposed site for special events, and one of the goals is to
support commercial businesses in the downtown area.
Mr. Lazson stated that the final proposed Master Plan will include preliminary designs and cost
estimates. The slide show was concluded at this point.
Ms. Bengtson emphasized that the intent of the task force is to develop a master plan that is sensitive to
and consistent with the guidelines and goals of the Downtown Specific Plan and the Downtown
Revitalization Plan.
Ms. Bengtson provided additional clarification on some of the projects and their components after
further questioning by members of the Commission.
PUBLIC HEARING WAS OPENED
Gerald Hedstrom addressed the Commission, noting that he is a member of the Pleasanton Community
Concert Band, a member of PCAC, and he also plays drum for the Livermore Symphony. He feels that
the bandshell at Wayside Pazk is inadequate. He reminded the Commission that Friday night concerts in
the park have been very successful and feels that the community deserves a nicer, updated bandshell for
such events. In addition, he stated that all three musical organizations which he mentioned would
benefit from having a ticket kiosk in the downtown azea.
Planning Commission Page 7 February 11, 1998
