_ Mr. Hart reported that Shaklee's motivation in designing such a unique campus is its motivation to <br />change the way its employees work. The office buildings will enable them to work more closely <br />together, and the attractively landscaped grounds will allow them to work outside and enjoy the weather. <br />Shaklee also will have a volleyball court and product demonstration gazdens. <br />Mr. Hart also described the different buildings and their locations. He noted that simple, but elegant, <br />devices will be used to reduce the amount of energy required to cool and heat the buildings and reduce <br />the number of hours that the lights will have to be turned on. <br />A question and answer session ensued relating to the various materials and colors for the buildings, the <br />landscaping, and the uses of the research and development lab. <br />William Fee, landscape azchitect, Royston, Hanamoto, Alley & Abey, 225 Miller Avenue, Mill Valley, <br />also represented the applicant. He presented a master plan illustration of the landscaping design, noting <br />that it is designed to attract employees to work outside. He stated that most of the demonstration <br />gazdens will be along the glass spine. In addition, a central courtyard will be developed during the Phase <br />I building process, which Shaklee considers to be the most important open space as it is adjacent to the <br />cafeteria and training center. He described the entire landscape plan in more detail, emphasizing that it <br />will have a pazk-like atmosphere with fruit trees in some of the courtyards. <br />E.J. Saucier, 5216 Genovesio Drive, Pleasanton, addressed the Commission. He feels this is a <br />wonderful project for the area and feels it will significantly enhance the business park. He is impressed <br />with the azchitectural design and landscaping and feels Shaklee will be a great neighbor. <br />PUBLIC HEARING WAS CLOSED <br />Larry Cannon stated that it has been interesting working on this project and it has been very interactive. <br />He has thoroughly reviewed the project and, in working together, all issues have been resolved with <br />regazd to the building azchitecture and design. <br />Commissioner Wright is excited about the project and feels that the azchitecture is "dynamite". He fully <br />supports the project. Commission Dove agreed and stated that it will be a wonderful addition to <br />Hacienda Business Park and to the City. <br />Commissioner Kumazan commended the azchitect for bringing in the model and the various illustrations <br />and materials samples. He feels the project would be a welcomed enhancement to the City. With regard <br />to the pazking issue, he feel that the requirements have been placed for a reason and suggests that they <br />remain in place. He is impressed with the architectural design and colors. He also stated that the <br />landscape plan is excellent and he looks forwazd to seeing it. <br />Commissioner Barker stated that she supports the applicant's request for a reduction in the required <br />number of parking spaces. Overall, she feels the project is very creative and well designed. She also <br />thanked the applicant for working so diligently with staff and PeopleSoft to be sure that all concerns <br />were adequately addressed. She voiced her support of the application. <br />Chair Cooper feels that the project's design is a striking azchitectural triumph. He feels the lovely <br />landscaping will give a beautiful view to people getting off of BART and that Shaklee would be a <br />Planning Commission Page 7 January 28, 1998 <br />
