much more benign, so the condition should probably be modified substantially to suit Shaklee's <br />situation. <br />Finally, Mr. Iserson stated that staff is quite pleased with the proposal. They feel that it has been very <br />well designed with a lot of attention to detail. Staff is especially pleased with the unique landscape <br />design and feels the project would be an attractive addition to the Hacienda Business Pazk and to the <br />City. Therefore, staff has recommended approval, subject to the conditions identified in Exhibit "B." <br />In response to a question by Chair Cooper, Mr. Higdon stated that dust control would be strictly <br />monitored, and that a representative from the City's engineering office would visit the site twice daily <br />during construction. Mr. Iserson answered a number of other questions by the Commissioners in order <br />to clazify certain aspects of the project. <br />PUBLIC HEARING WAS OPENED <br />Mazk Sweeney, represented the property owner and presented a map of the site, pointing out its close <br />proximity to the BART station. Mr. Sweeney stated that property owner's association looks out for the <br />interest of all property owners, and there aze strict reviews for development of the Hacienda Business <br />Park. With regard to the parking issue, he noted that the landscaping could be modified in the future to <br />accommodate additional pazking, if necessary, since Shaklee is faz exceeding the landscape requirement. <br />He stated that although the architecture of the proposed project is unique and different from any other <br />structure in the business pazk, he is comfortable with it and, in fact, has been hoping for such a unique <br />addition to the area. He expressed his pleasure in working with Shaklee and staff on this project and <br />looks forwazd to having them in the area. <br />Kay Childs, Vice-President, Human Resources, Shaklee Corporation, 444 Market Street, San Francisco, <br />is the Project Manager for the new campus, and represented Shaklee Corporation. She gave a history of <br />Shaklee stating that it promotes healthy, natural vitamins, food supplements, and protein drinks. <br />With regard to the concern expressed by Chair Cooper relating to hazazdous material, she stated that <br />their labs are for research and development only and that all work in the labs will be done naturally <br />without chemicals. <br />Ms. Childs also reported that Shaklee Corporation also owns Beaz Creek (Harry & David) and Jackson <br />Perkins. In addition, Shaklee was purchased by a Japanese pharmaceutical company in 1989 and, <br />therefore, they are now doing some pharmacological research and development. Their Palo Alto facility <br />will eventually manufacture pharmaceutical products at that location. A brief question and answer <br />period followed relating to uses of the campus. <br />Kevin Hart, architect for the project, of Gensler, 600 California Street, San Francisco, introduced his <br />associates, Lev Weisbach and Dennis Schmidt. He presented a model of the site, several elevation <br />drawings and details, the landscaping plan, and materials samples.
