2. In all buildings of all occupancies except Groups R1, R3 and U occupancies on a <br />parcel when the building(s) area(s) on the parcel exceeds 8,000 square feet of floor <br />area, including area of basements. <br />3. All buildings residential or commercial over 5 minutes response time, as determined <br />by the Fire chief, from a City fire station. <br />4. Any structure in any area or location determined by the Fire Chief to be a high fire <br />hazard. High fire hazard area shall be defined as those areas beyond five minutes <br />driving time of fire apparatus from the fire station serving those particular districts; or <br />areas determined by the Fire Chief to be either high hazard areas or extreme hazard <br />areas based on steepness of slope and/or fuel loadings from combustible plant <br />materials as set forth in the Safety Element of the General Plan. <br />5. In every story or basement of all buildings when the floor area exceeds 1,500 <br />square feet (139.4 m2) and there is not provided at least 20 square feet (1.86 m2) of <br />opening entirely above the adjoining ground level in each 50 lineal feet (15 240 mm) or <br />fraction thereof of exterior wall in the story or basement on at least one side of the <br />building. Openings shall have a minimum dimension of not less than 30 inches (762 <br />mm). Such openings shall be accessible to the fire department from the exterior and <br />shall not be obstructed in a manner that firefighting or rescue cannot be accomplished <br />from the exterior. When openings in a story are provided on only one side and the <br />opposite wall of such story is more than 75 feet (22 860 mm) from such openings, the <br />story shall be provided with an approved automatic sprinkler system, or openings as <br />specified above shall be provided on at least two sides of an exterior wall of the story. <br />If any portion of a basement is located more than 75 feet (22 860 mm) from openings <br />required in this section, the basement shall be provided with an approved automatic <br />sprinkler system. <br />6. At the top of rubbish and linen chutes and in their terminal rooms. Chutes extending <br />through three or more floors shall have additional sprinkler heads installed within such <br />chutes at alternate floors. Sprinkler heads shall be accessible for servicing. <br />7. In rooms where nitrate film is stored or handled. <br />8. In protected combustible fiber storage vaults as defined in the Fire Code. <br />9. Throughout all buildings with a floor level with an occupant load of 30 or more that is <br />located 55 feet (16 764 mm) or more above the lowest level of fire department vehicle <br />access. <br />EXCEPTION: 1.
