residents to make monetary donations to the organization to help augment the activities that are <br />currently going on in the South. The City has included the capability to include other <br />organizations such as Habitat for Humanity and other organizations that are sanctioned by the <br />U.S. Government. Over the next 30 days, the City will be setting up collection bins at several <br />City facilities in addition to collection bins at the First Wednesday Street Party and the Farmer's <br />Market for the remainder of September, which allows people to contribute to the American Red <br />Cross Relief Fund. A steering committee comprised of City personnel and community members <br />are currently in the process of organizing a spaghetti feed and silent auction to be held at <br />Amador Valley High School on October 1 from 2 to 7 p.m. All proceeds will be given to the <br />recovery effort. Volunteers to help with this event are needed and are asked to contact Becky <br />Hopkins at (925) 931-3432. He suggested Council consider and take action to appropriate <br />funds on behalf of the City of Pleasanton to the American Red Cross Relief Fund. <br />Mayor Hosterman mentioned another opportunity to fundraise might present itself. The <br />President of Oracle Corporation has mentioned that Oracle is interested in partnering with the <br />City on a regional fundraiser with possibly the cities of Dublin and Livermore. She asked Council <br />for its direction on how it wished to proceed with allocating disaster relief funds. <br />Mayor Hosterman invited public comments. <br />Kelly Jones, a Pleasanton resident, mentioned that he was personally affected by <br />Hurricane Katrina as the majority of his family members who live in New Orleans have lost their <br />home and will have to relocate to Pleasanton to live with him. He asked what type of help he <br />and his family might be able to receive up to and including access to any of the programs or <br />assistance that anyone might be able to provide with respect to housing for his family members. <br />He thanked the City for doing everything it possibly could in providing assistance through this <br />trying time. <br />Mr. Brozosky mentioned he has been contacted by residents asking how they might <br />help, including offering rooms to house people on a temporary basis. He asked staff to act as <br />the intermediator to collect these names and make them available upon request. <br />Mr. Fialho said this type of information could be included on the City's website with a <br />direct link to the U.S. Conference of Mayors which is the organization that is currently <br />coordinating and the collection point for housing opportunities throughout the Country. <br />Ms. McGovern asked if it was possible to include on the City's website the names of <br />Pleasanton families who have family members coming to live with them so that a support group <br />could be assembled with Human Services Commission, who might be able to provide <br />assistance as to the types of health care services that are available. <br />Mr. Fialho said as a matter of resources, this information could be posted on the City's <br />website which would place people in contact with the appropriate agencies in Alameda County. <br />Dennis Loyer, a Pleasanton resident, challenged Council to revisit the City's emergency <br />disaster plan for the community and make this plan available to the entire community. <br />Mayor Hosterman closed the public comments. <br />Pleasanton City Council 9 09/06/05 <br />Minutes <br />
