G. Roger Gathers addressed the City Council in opposition to a debate on the war in Iraq <br />Tony Slimick spoke in opposition to Council holding a forum on the war. He referenced <br />campaign promises that were made and how things have changed. He stated he feels <br />several of the Councilmembers have let the people of Pleasanton down. <br />Doug Miller asked the Council to remove the idea of a meeting or discussion regarding the <br />Iraq war from the February 20th agenda. He urged that it should not take place while <br />there are servicemen in harms way. <br />Bob Sanchez addressed the City Council indicating his son is currently serving in the Army <br />and has served in Iraq. He stated the Council should not spend their time or resources on <br />a discussion regarding the war in Iraq. <br />Norman Thomas addressed the City Council expressing that they should not be dividing <br />the community by holding a debate on the war. <br />David Stauffer addressed the City Council and stressed the importance of the City Council <br />focusing on local issues and not federal issues. <br />Mayor Hosterman indicated the issue at hand is not an agendized matter, and it would not <br />be appropriate for the Council to discuss it tonight. A discussion will be held on February <br />20th regarding details of the proposed forum. <br />PUBLIC HEARINGS AND OTHER MATTERS <br />19. Public Hearing: Consider recommendations for use of Citizen's Option for Public Safety <br />Program (COPS) appropriation and adopt a resolution approving expenditures from the <br />State of California COPS program <br />The City Manager introduced the new Police Chief Michael J. Fraser <br />Chief Fraser gave an overview of the staff report and indicated that State Assembly Bill <br />3229 established the Citizens' Options for Public Safety (COPS) funding program. These <br />funds, allocated from the State Budget, are distributed to local law enforcement to support <br />line level law enforcement functions. This past year, the Governor has renewed funding <br />for fiscal year 2006/07. The City of Pleasanton has received $132,000 from the State of <br />California. He recommended the City Council hold a public hearing and adopt the <br />resolution approving expenditures from the State of California COPS program funds as <br />noted in the staff report. <br />Mayor Hosterman opened the public hearing. Hearing no requests to speak, the public <br />hearing was closed. <br />Motion: It was m/s by Thorne/Cook-Kallio to adopt Resolution No. 07-090 approving <br />expenditures from the State of California COPS program.
