Ayes: Cook-Kallio, McGovern, Sullivan, Throne, Mayor Hosterman <br />Noes: None <br />Absent: None <br />MEETING OPEN TO THE PUBLIC <br />15. 2006 Best Workplaces for Commuters sM Employer Presentation <br />Economic Development Director Pamela Ott gave a report on those employers receiving <br />recognition and plaques were presented. <br />16. Oath of Office for newly appointed commissioners <br />Councilmember Sullivan recognized those new and reappointed commissioners and the <br />City Clerk administered the oath of office. <br />17. Recognition of outgoing commissioners <br />Councilmember Sullivan read the names of the outgoing commissioners and thanked <br />them for their commitment to the community. <br />Arnie Olson, Economic Vitality Committee and Brian Arkin, Planning Commissioner, were <br />present and were recognized for their service. <br />18. Public Comment <br />Karen Wind addressed the City Council regarding the ongoing issue of whether the conflict <br />in Iraq is an appropriate topic for the City Council to hold a public forum. She read a letter <br />from Lee Burgeson whose husband serves in Iraq. She does not want to see the Council <br />support a forum where people will be "bashing" the President for the war. <br />Fred Norman addressed the City Council regarding the many servicemen and women who <br />serve the United States in Iraq. <br />Dan Faustina addressed the City Council regarding the recent decision of the Council to <br />host a forum or a debate on the war in Iraq. He believed this issue has no place being <br />debated by local officials during City Council Meetings. The issue of war is an issue for an <br />executive branch and congress to discuss and take action. <br />Judy Dollard addressed the City Council regarding a proposed debate on the war. She felt <br />this would go way beyond the scope of a local City Council. She commented on how her <br />son is currently serving in Iraq as a Marine and asked that the Council keep the war off the <br />agenda. <br />Shari Kirby stated that Pleasanton's duly elected officials should not set aside time for City <br />Council Meetings to discuss world politics. She noted her son is also deployed in Iraq <br />and she urged the Council to not hold a debate and create stress for those serving in Iraq. <br />Gary Kinsman addressed the City Council requesting that the Council drop the item to <br />discuss a future debate on the war in the Middle East on the February 20th agenda.
