Mayor Hosterman invited public comments.
Mike Madden, President of the PDA, said owners and managers of many retail
businesses located off Main Street believed they were at a disadvantage and believed
additional signage was a necessary component to their success. The PDA's Retail Side Street
Signage Committee (RSSSC) visited other communities for examples of permanent off-site
signs to identify businesses within a downtown area. Through the work of the RSSSC and with
input from City staff, the PDA has developed two design options for consideration by the
Council. He encouraged Council to support Option 1 as the preferred design.
Michael O'Callaghan, PDA Boardmember, asked Council to support the PDA's
endeavor.
Mayor Hosterman closed the public comments.
It was moved by Ms. McGovern, seconded by Mr. Brozosky, to approve Option 2
(Attachment B as attached to the staff report) as the preferred sign design.
Ms. McGovern indicated her interest in pursuing illuminating the first four signs.
Mr. Fialho believed $3,400 was a rough estimate and the cost could be more which is
why he suggested lighting fixtures on poles that already have electricity. If Council decided to
pursue this as a project in the future, staff could build it into the Capital Improvement Program.
Ms. McGovern believed it was easier to illuminate the signs at the time the signs were
originally installed.
The roll call vote was taken as follows:
AYES: Councilmembers - Brozosky, McGovern, Sullivan, Thorne, and
Mayor Hosterman
NOES: None
ABSENT: None
ABSTAINED: None
It was moved by Ms. McGovern to illuminate the first four signs.
The motion died due to a lack of a second.
Mr. Brozosky asked if there would be a cost savings in illuminating the signs initially as
opposed to later.
Mr. Fialho said the costs associated with this activity are unique and the costs might be
substantially more than $3,500 per unit.
Mr. Brozoskyasked if temporary lighting could be provided.
Mr. Fialho said a temporary downward reflecting light could be installed on the pole.
Pleasanton City Council 28 10/18105
Minutes
