compromise to go with a steel super ~tmcture for a portion of the bridge that would not <br />negatively impact the old bridge. Ha believed this was important, but given the <br />escalation in the cost of steel, it was no longer practical. He believed Council should do <br />what it could to come up with a way to build a new bridge next to the old bridge that <br />complements it, improves pedestrianiand traffic safety, and traffic circulation. He would <br />like to see the De Silva Group contributing more money to the bridge, but he also <br />believed Council should remain true to its commitments. <br /> <br /> Ms. Ayala indicated that she had no desire to remove the existing bridge. She <br />asked if the idea was to try and hide the new bridge? <br /> <br />Ms. McKeehan said it is just the opposite. <br /> <br /> Mr. Thomas said staff believes that a more simple bridge would complement the <br />existing bridge rather than hide it. <br /> <br /> Mayor Pico believed that motorists coming from the south would see more of the <br />bridge, as it currently is buried in th~ trees. By placing a new bridge next to the existing <br />bridge, it will make it stand out. <br /> <br /> Ms. McKeehan said that the aew bridge provides a frame for the existing bridge <br />and the motorist's attention will be drawn to the existing bridge. <br /> <br /> Ms. Ayala seemed to recall that Council had discussed upgrading the existing <br />bridge. <br /> <br /> Ms. McKeehan recalled that Council discussed wanting to do something on the <br />entrance of the bridge at the north en~l of Main Street. <br /> <br /> Mayor Pico noted that the final design, contract and funding for the second bridge <br />would return to Council for its final approval. Staff is currently asking Council for <br />direction to eliminate the false steel superstructure and provide direction for a new design <br />for a concrete bridge that will have some architecturally pleasing elements and <br />complement the old bridge. <br /> <br /> Ms. McKeehan strongly emphasized that there is no intent of doing anything to <br />the existing bridge. <br /> <br />Ms. Ayala asked if there is a problem with traffic in this part of town? <br /> <br />Ms. McKeehan said yes. <br /> <br /> Mr. Brozosky mentioned that the action taken by the Planning Commission at its <br />meeting on July 29, 2004 was to recgmmend to Council to pursue options that comply as <br />closely as possible with the original agreement.
