There was a break at 8:55 p.m.

The meeting reconvened at 9:07 p.m.
6_~c
Redesign of the second Bernai Avehue Brld~,e over Arroyo de la Lacuna. (gR
04:171) ~

George Thomas, Building Official, presented the staff report.

Ms. Hosterman asked if it is possible to redesign the second bridge for $1.2
million dollars?

Mr. Thomas pointed out that the price of concrete has been increasing. The goal
is get the bridge built quickly to avoid a higher price. In order to be a minimal cost to the
City, staff is going to negotiate with the De Silva Group to see if it would be willing to
contribute towards the remaining balance.

Ms. Hosterman wondered if there would be an opportunity to make use of the
existing structure somewhere else so that it could be preserved. She asked what the
difference would be in the price for c:onstruction of a concrete span if that span were to be
replaced?

Mr. Thomas said that the existing bridge would accommodate the westbound
traffic between 1-680 and Foothill R6ad. The new two-lane concrete bridge, which
would be to the south of the existing !bridge, would accommodate two lanes of eastbound
traffic. The concept would be to place the pedestrian waikways on the outer hnuts of
each of the bridges. A motorist approaching the bridges will be able to differentiate
between the two bridges as they willlnot look alike and will be noticeably different in
detailing.

Ms. Hosterman is trying to picture what it will look like if the new structure is
placed next to the existing structure that is nothing like it, but attempts to mimic another
historical style.

Mr. Thomas mentioned that the Director of Public Works talked with some
historians as to how they would feel about it. Generally, the historians were more
interested in trying not to fully repliqate an existing bridge· He noted that this bridge
could be recreated today and be representative of bridges of that time.

Ms. Hosterman said she was not interested in replicating a full bridge.

Mayor Pico recalled Council,s discussion in 1993. He noted that people were
pleading to preserve the old bridge as part of the history of the Valley and the City of
Pleasanton as there are not many of these bridges remaining. The thinking at the time
was to do something that would complement the existing bridge. It was a real

Pleasanton City Council 14 08/03/04
Minutes
