Mayor Pico said it continues to appear that the City of Pleasanton is in excellent financial
condition. Not only is the City transferring $5.7 million from the General Fund to
Capital Improvements, Pleasanton is also adding $1.1 million to the Temporary
Recession Reserve and could potentially have as much as $1 million for the Additional
Surplus Funds, after meeting all of the additional requirements. In these difficult
financial times, it is a very admirable position for the City to be in.

There was no action taken or required on this item.

Authorization to Issue a Request for Proposals for the Fabrication and
Installations of City Gateway Signage (SR 04:091)

Steven Bocian presented the staffreport and a PowerPoint presentation.

Mr. Campbell asked if there would be any problems with the landscaping presently in
place at the proposed locations.

Mr. Bocian said those medians have been identified and there would be some small
adjustments to the landscaping that is not reflected in the staff report

Mayor Pico said he was not overwhelmed with the proposed signage. He would like to
see a bracket added onto the signs in order to add an optional message. These signs will
be at the gateways to the community and it would be appropriate to have the opportunity
to have some sort of message. He felt that without a message the City would lose an
additional medium for communication.

Mr. Brozosky felt it was very plain and indicates the location, but not the community. A
message would indicate a more "welcome to our community" feeling.

Mayor Pico said a changeable message is something that could be easily accommodated.
This would not significantly alter the appearance.

Ms. Hosterman was interested in seeing if this could be accomplished in an aesthetically
pleasing way. If this is possible, she would like to see this alternative. She is concerned
about lighting up another nine spots in Pleasanton. She asked if this is important to have
these particular monument signs lit and if it is important, would it be possible to
incorporate the lighting in such a way that it is attractive and aesthetically pleasing, with
the lighting from the top down, versus from the bottom up.

Mr. Brozosky said he did not feel it was necessary to light the signs.

Mr. Campbell said he liked the elegance in the simplicity of the signage and did not want
to see any sort of message attached.

Pleasanton City Council 10 04.20.04
Minutes
