Ms. Ayaia indicated that it depended upon which plan one was looking at.

Mr. Arkin noted that Council might want to allow for some dialogue with the
sports community to come up with a number of how many lighted and how many non-
lighted sports fields, and at least provide that as part of the criteria. I-Ie was not in favor
of limiting the sports fields to a certain area. He viewed the Bemal property as the City's
version of the Golden Gate Park where all of the elements of the park are scattered
around and nicely coordinated and flow together. He thought it would be a good idea to
encourage the architects to place a few of the sports fields close to existing infrastructure.

Paul Zampierin, 3588 Crespi Court, Director of the Pleasanton Lacrosse Club,
noted his concern in leaving the design concept too open. He believed the lighted sports
fields had to be located on a particular area on the Bernal property and by adopting the
initiative, it would be the only answer to obtain something concrete that will be useful out
of the design competition. He believed it would still leave room for a creative process for
the design competition. He believed designers would do an adequate job, but noted that
they are not politicians and they cannot place lighted sports fields next to homes. Again,
he believed the lighted sports fields should be restricted to a particular area as outlined in
the initiative.

Kurt Kummer, 4456 Clovewood Lane, encouraged Council to go ahead with the
design process. His desire was to make sure that the design process included the
possibility for the designers to have a clean slate, a completely blank canvass on which to
design. He believed there was a community consensus that sports fields are needed and
what should be the best idea for the crown jewel of Pleasanton. He would like the school
children and art classes to become a part of the design competition, and recommended
that the amateur competition have more than just a first, second and third place winner.
He would like to see the top 10 winners receive a prize, which will encourage the school
children to participate.

Margaret Gordon provided written communication to Council requesting that it
exclude the planned fields from the current design contest. She requested that the
planned fields be implemented as soon as possible.

Forest Tracy, a Pleasanton resident, provided written communication to Council
in opposition to delaying the construction of the sports fields on the Bemal property.

Mike Beddome, 597 Dolores Place, provided written communication to Council
reminding them that the orig/nal plans for the property were to include a 30-50 acre park
area with lighted sports fields. If a design competition goes forward, he believed Council
needed to ensure that sports fields are a mandatory component of any design. This is a
city that supports its youth.

Ms. Suzanne Ganser provided written communication to Council voicing her
concerns about the possibility of not having additional sports fields on the Bemal

Pleasanton City Council 16 03/02/04
Minutes
