Don Lewis, 233 Junipero Street, was encouraged to hear what has occurred this
evening. As a resident of Pleasanton since 1981, he mentioned that he has seen the
Bemal property fi.om a perspective that others have not. He would like to see the kind of
tranquility that he felt walking the Bernal property and for people to be allowed to
experience this through the process of the Block Party. He did not care how long the
process took and noted that the money the City is spending to invest in the planning for
the Bemal property was a small amount in leaving a legacy in the valley for both the
young and old members of the community. He believed the City of Pleasanton could be
a world-class city - a city that is balanced and appreciates all of the aspects of living. All
of the aspects should be proportionally represented in the plan.

Bruce Torquemada, 3072 Albumi Court, was confused regarding the 800-foot
setback and asked if the sports fields would fall within or outside of that setback.

Mayor Pico said the proponents of the initiative are proposing that the sports
fields be 800 feet away fi.om the houses.

Mr. Torquemada noted that at another Council meeting, residents were
complaining about the height of the skateboard park that was being constructed for Val
Vista Park. He reminded Council that it had gone through the entire process and when it
was being built, it had to be changed. He did not want to see this happen with the Bernal
property.

Ms. Ayala pointed out that the skateboard park was 40 feet fi.om the residences
versus 800 feet for the Bemal property.

Mr. Torquemada hoped that the community decided on something that is right for
the whole community at the Bemal property. He would like to see sports facilities on the
Bemal property and was hopeful that it could be done quickly. He believed it was a great
idea to assemble something that will go to a vote of the people that will not be changed
by a new Council. He stated that he had a bias to sports but wanted to see other uses
included on the Bemal property.

Mary Roberts, 1666 Vineyard Avenue, implored Council to go through with the
design competition. She acknowledged the Task Force for obtaining all of the
information and pulling together the major stakeholders. She believed committees were
particularly poor at design and it would be much better to get someone who has an
overall vision. She concurred with Mayor Pico's idea and wanted the community to be
given a chance to see something other than a standard sports park or community park.

Brian Arkin, 3740 Newton Way, was glad that the community was at a point
where it was discussing what uses would be placed on the Bemal property. He believed
this was a wonderful process and was looking forward to seeing what the design
competition comes up with. He suggested that Council specify, numerically, how many
sports fields it wants on the Bemal property. In looking at the plans, he believed it called
for 10 sports fields.

Pleasanton City Council 15 03/02/04
Minutes
