Julie Lewis, 233 Junipero Street, addressed Council regarding the possibility of its
reconsideration of the design competition for the Bernal Property. As a member of the
Task Force for the Bernal Block Party, she has gained a sense of the community coming
together for a great purpose, which will create a special place for the community. She
believed a design competition would open it up to generate creative ideas that would
benefit the entire community. She was excited about the oppommity for a design
competition and urged Council to move forward with the competition.

Don Lewis, 233 Junipero Street, concurred with Ms. Lewis's comments. He
believed the Bemal property to be a girl and each part of the community should be
equally represented in sharing the property.

Joan Johnson, 4570 Tahoe Court, representing Pleasanton Adult Civic Soccer,
mentioned that her organization is impacted by the lack of field space available. She
encouraged Council to consider exempting the sports park from the design competition
for the Bemal property.

Cindy McGovem, 9206 Longview Drive, was encouraged by the overwhelming
attendance of youth at tonight's meeting. She encouraged them to use this meeting to
become familiar with the issues within the community that will affect their age group,
and voice their concerns. She congratulated Mayor Pico and Council for reaching the
consensus to hold a design competition for the Bernal property. She believed this action
represented the wishes of the entire community. For clarification, she asked ifa
Councilmember had the right to request that an item be held over until the next regularly
schedule meeting if the member were unable to attend?

Mr. Roush indicated that an absent Council member could ask another Council
member to continue the matter for one meeting, unless there was a time limit that would
require Council to take action that evening.

Ms. McGovem encouraged Council to request an item be continued if the
Councilmember knew that he or she were going to be absent prior to the matter coming
before the full body, as she believed it was unfair to the community who had taken the
time to address an issue that might be considered again. She embraced the individual
ideas suggested for the Bernal property and encouraged Council to continue to proceed
with the design competition.

Rory Manley, 1148 Vintner Way, addressed Council in opposition to the design
competition for the Bemai property, and urged Council to reconsider its decision.

Rob Adamson, 351 Ewing Drive, did not believe the majority of City parks were
being used effectively and were not suitable for organized sports. He suggested that
these parks be considered favorably to accommodate the arts community. He
acknowledged the lack of field space that was currently available for organized sports

Pleasanton City Council 5 01/06/04
Minutes
