back with a little report on whether it was possible. When the story poles were erected and she
saw the proposed silo and its location, it was obvious that what was missing was the rest of the
land going down hill to the arroyo as it appeared in the old pictures. The embankment makes the
silo look 62 feet tall, not 42 feet tall. She learned the silo is not essential for the park and felt the
matter should be brought to a conclusion now. She wanted to make it clear that the Council has
already approved the barn. She wanted people to know that Council did not ignore all the time
and effort spent on the silo issue. It was just a matter of three Councilmembers who were
interested in taking another look at the situation. She definitely respects the process that was
followed and the conclusions that were reached. She did not support having any silo on the
hillside. She pointed out that the proposed 26 acre land donation is within the Foothill Overlay
District and she would not support a silo there. She hoped to have a very nice Alviso Adobe
Park that everyone can enjoy.

Mr. Campbell said the Alviso Adobe Park came before him the second meeting after he
was elected and he was not privy to the previous conversations or process. That was why he
supported investigating the silo. He complimented the community on their communication
abilities and how organized they were in the emalls and the diligence to be at the Council
meeting so late on a workday. He said he read everything. Now that he has a year and a half to
think about this, he did not want the silo issue to dwarf the bigger issue of the park. He felt the
silo would be an over-representation of the dairy and the Native American and Spanish influence
would be lost or minimized. He did not support the silo.

It was moved by Mayor Pico, seconded by Ms. Michelotti, to eliminate the replica
dairy silo from the plan for the Alviso Adobe Park.

The roll call vote was as follows:
AYES: Councilmembers - Campbell, Michelotti, and Mayor Pico
NOES: Councilmember Ayala
ABSENT: Councilmember Dennis
ABSTAIN: None

Ms. Ayala commented that people rallied against Coit Tower and the Eiffel Tower. She
felt there was a location that the silo would fit in a way that would not have been intrusive to the
neighborhood. She felt Pleasanton was losing a piece of history.

Ms. Michelotti also recognized all the emails received and noted that many had been
neutral on the issue until the story poles were installed.

Mayor Pico felt the intent of the Foothill Overlay District was to protect everything west
of Foothill Road. He asked staff whether the barn needed to be white. The physical structure of
the barn will serve its purpose and it could be any color. He felt the barn could be less obtrusive
at the site.

It was moved by Mayor Pico, seconded by Mr. Campbell, to direct staff to explore
colors for the barn other than white.

Pleasanton City Council 24 08/20/02
Minutes
