volunteered to serve the community and that is what we need to teach the youth. However, there
is a place and a method and a credit would be appropriate. Considering the relationship of
compensation for the adults and youth, she felt a different amount for the youth should be
considered. It seems like these days all we do is throw money at things. We don't have time to
volunteer as many people did in the past because of the constraints of where we work and live,
so we write checks instead.

It was moved by Ms. Dennis, seconded by Mr. Campbell, to adopt Resolution No.
02-046, to approve compensation to the extent permitted by law for the Youth
Commissioners.

A substitute motion was made by Ms. Michelotti, seconded by Ms. Ayala, to
investigate the idea of giving credit to the youth.

The roll call vote on the substitute motion was as follows:

AYES:
NOES:
ABSENT:
ABSTAIN:

Councilmembers Ayala and Michelotti
Councilmembers Campbell, Dennis, and Mayor Pico
None
None

Ms. Dennis offered an amendment. She supported the idea of working with the District
to offer credit, particularly because there is a great opportunity for the Youth who will work
many ours on the commission to create work product and will have records of what they do. She
would like to support the motion, but not in lieu of the compensation question. Whatever the
outcome of the original motion on compensation, she would like to work with the District to
investigate some credit for service in City programs, either as a commissioner or some other
opportunity for a special project.

Mr. Campbell indicated he worked with the youth every day and they work hard in the
classroom and outside of it. Each school is different when it comes to giving credit for certain
things. The idea is good, but when one considers the logistics of the various schools, home
schools, private schools, he was not certain how realistic giving credit was.

Ms. Michelotti did not accept the amendment.

The vote on the original motion was as follows:

The roll call vote was as follows:
AYES: Councilmembers - Campbell, Dennis, Michelotti, and Mayor Pico
NOES: Councilmember Ayala
ABSENT: None
ABSTAIN: None

There was a break at 9:20 p.m.

The meeting reconvened at 9:30 p.m.

Pleasanton City Council 15 05/07/02
Minutes
