Albert J. Wiemken, P. O. Box 969, commented it was a pleasure to work with City staff
and mentioned several individuals who had been very helpful to him. He expressed his concerns
about Martin Avenue and indicated his belief that it needs to be widened. He indicated there was
a problem with the announcement for the neighborhood meeting and felt staff should hold
another meeting. He said it costs about $120,000 to widen a street 1,625 feet. He said Martin
Avenue is only 16'3". The normal street is 28'. He believed there were safety issues because of
the school traffic and suggested some Measure B funds could be used for this. He asked Council
to assure him that the question of widening Martin Avenue is not a dead issue and that staff
would continue to investigate this.

Mr. Lum said this issue has been under study for some time and is still active. He agreed
staff would like to have a meeting with the neighborhood to see if there was support for the
widening. There have been mixed opinions about this. Staffdoes not believe there are safety
concerns. The road is 18' wide and there is a separated bike/pedestrian path for children to use.
There is not much traffic on this street and a recent count indicated only 50 vehicles using the
street. The Fire Department feels the width is adequate. After the neighborhood meeting, staff
will bring a report back to Council. Staff was not prepared to make a recommendation with this
budget.

Mr. Wiemken said he had talked with the Fire Department and pointed out it had required
twenty feet for the fire lane at Trenery Drive. He related his experience today when PG&E had
trucks parked on the road and he had to drive off the road to get around them. He felt there was
speeding and safety was a problem.

Ms. Ayala said that neighborhood had been extremely supportive when the pathway was
constructed. She was positive the neighbors would want to give input on any improvements.

Ms. Michelotti has been involved with this area for a long time and there is a strong
desire to maintain the rural setting and quality of life.

Michael Ottati, 9002 Longview Drive, indicated he is working to get a garden at the
Donlon School. He commented on the number of times nature and the environment has been
mentioned at the Council meeting and was very pleased. He believed it was very important to
have a small area for four to six year olds to learn how things grow. He thanked Council for its
support.

Ms. Dennis thanked him for his comments and noted that community gardens are very
popular with adults too.

Jerry Thome, 5144 Hummingbird Road, referred to the items regarding the Vineyard
Corridor Infrastructure. Once that is resolved with the School District, he asked when it would
be available for public comment.

Ms. McKeehan indicated that would be on a Council agenda as soon as there is an
agreement. She estimated either July 16 or a special meeting some other time in July.

Pleasanton City Council 9 06/18/02
Minutes
