be modified to fit into a different space. The reason the process is going to the Task Force is that
the Parks and Recreation Commission prefers to have a design it can react to rather than to try to
design a park at the Commission meetings.

Ms. Michelotti said that in the original plan the cultural arts center was combined with
the sports park and she felt that concept should be kept.

Mr. Wolfe indicated that it was important to consider potential adjacent uses to maximize
uses and shared parking facilities.

Ms. Michelotti asked how much money was available for this project and what that
would provide.

Mr. Wolfe said about $2.5 million. There is discussion at the Task Force about a smaller
project and how many lighted sports fields should actually be there. The Task Force will review
how many lighted fields would actually be used. The plan is to run conduit to every field,
whether it is lighted immediately or not.

Ms. Ayala inquired about trails on the vacant portion of the Phase II area. She asked if
there was funding to provide trails so people could enjoy the property. Until one is actually
walking on the property, it is difficult to get the full impact of the amount of acreage there.

Mr. Wolfe indicated there is a funding reserve that can be allocated for trails
improvements.

Ms. McKeehan indicated Council could direct staff to review that concept, but could not
approve a project at this meeting.

Ms. Ayala asked if there was interest on the Parks and Recreation Commission to pursue
these trails.

Mr. Wolfe said trails on the Bernal property were not addressed in the Trails Master Plan.
The focus was more on projects that were in process or had been discussed for a long period of
time. These were trails that made regional trails connections or that could be improved and
opened fairly quickly.

Ms. Michelotti indicated there had been discussions at Council meetings about trails on
the west side and she did not think that has been addressed.

Mr. Wolfe agreed the Commission has not addressed trails on the Bemal property.

Ms. Dennis asked if the Arroyo Mocho trail could be opened in July?

Mr. Wolfe said there are two things happening. One is to work with the Parkside
neighborhood on a mitigation plan. He has spoken with the neighborhood's legal representative
and he felt a draft mitigation plan is close. The Arroyo Mocho trail will not be opened until a

Pleasanton City Council 7 06/18/02
Minutes
