and focus only on hiding the building is a bad idea and would not result in a good building that
people will appreciate over time. She was thrilled with the architecture and the fact that the
building trades have come to support an environmental building project. She did not believe
there was a better solution for the roof screen. It is a good and elegant solution. She hoped that
the neighborhood over time would recognize the good things they have done with their input and
in making sure the design was the best it could be.

Mayor Pico covered other items in the staff report and there were no objections. He
asked about public use of the trails. He favored the concept.

Ms. Dennis said this is a single user campus. If the site ever became a multi-user
campus, then she would support public use of the trail.

Ms. Michelotti pointed out that the northern trail does cross a comer of the property and
gives access to the Bemal property. She felt Applied Biosystems has gone quite a ways on this.

Ms. Ayala indicated she wanted the $400,000 park fee being paid by Applied Biosystems
to be used in the south Pleasanton area.

Mayor Pico asked how Council felt about the recommendation for lower trees in the
median. He supported the Olsons' position and the Planning Commission recommendation.

Ms. Ayala said that would keep the view open in one area and she preferred to have the
median be consistent. She and the other Councilmembers supported the staff recommendation.

Ms. Dennis indicated this would be a similar planting gateway concept as on Hopyard
Road. In addition the trees are deciduous and there would be a view.

Mr. Swift explained the planting concept and the fact that the trees would be spaced to
allow some views through them.

It was moved by Ms. Ayala, seconded by Ms. Dennis to adopt Resolution No. 01-121,
approving the application of Applied Biosystems for Planned Unit Development plan
approval, as f'fled under Case PUD-16, subject to the staff recommendations, and to
introduce Ordinance No. 1845, to be read by title only and waiving further reading thereof,
approving a major modification to a Planned Unit Development, as f'ded under Case PUD-
98-07-01M, to allow an increase in the building height.

The roll call vote was as follows:
AYES: Councilmembers - Ayala, Campbell, Dennis, Michelotti, and Mayor Pico
NOES: None
ABSENT: None
ABSTAIN: None

Pleasanton City Council 13 12/04/01
Minutes
