Valley Business Council meetings and finds them very useful in finding common interests
among the surrounding communities and exchanging ideas.

Ms. Ayala asked this to be removed from the Consent Calendar because of her concerns
about how the money is being spent by the Business Council. The budget of the Business
Council is $500,000, even though Pleasanton's contribution is only $25,000. She was very
troubled by the amount of money being spent for consultants and proceeded to list the consultant
fees, salaries, and other itemized expenses in the budget. She also wanted five examples of how
Pleasanton has benefited fi.om the money it has spent so far. She felt she needed more
information on the political aspects of this. She wanted to know if this organization had
provided support to any political entities. When taxpayers' dollars are being spent, it is
important to know where the money is going.

M~. McKeehan indicated that a great deal of the funds for this organization comes from
private donations and private foundations. The cities and County have been minor contributors
over the course of its existence.

Mayor Pico suggested continuing the item to allow Ms. Ayala to get the information she
requested. If further discussion is necessary, it can be scheduled for a future Council meeting.

Ms. Michelotti suggested a presentation from Tom O'Malley of the Business Council at a
future meeting.

Ms. Dennis indicated she would be happy to share information with Ms. Ayala on how
Pleasanton has benefited from its investment in the organization.

Item 6f (4f)
Participation in amicus curiae brief concerning the compliance of Ci~. sidewalks with the
Americans with Disabilities Act (SR 01:202)

Michael Roush presented the staffreport.

There was discussion about Pleasanton's program for sidewalk compliance with the ADA
requirements.

Mr. Campbell asked if there was a list of residents subject to the ADA that need extra
assistance in their neighborhoods.

Ms. McKeehan indicated there was no way to know that.

Mr. Campbell felt there was a philosophical argument about the role of government in
providing for its citizens. He referred to people he knows with mobility problems and
understood the problems they must encounter. He had a problem supporting the City of
Sacramento if it does not provide for handicapped individuals. He asked if Pleasanton had a
general timeline of when all the sidewalks would be compliant with ADA.

Pleasanton City Council 10 08/21/01
Minutes
