Item 6b
Consideration of a recommendation by the City of Pleasanton to change the name of
the eastern segment of Del Valle Parkway, located east of Bernal Avenue and
terminating 300 feet east of California Avenue, to Nebraska Street. (SR 01:089)

Brian Swift presented the staff report.

Ms. Ayala asked if Mr. SwiR had seen the letter from Mr. and Mr. Beratlis
suggesting the name be changed to California.

Mr. Swift said that he had and that the immediate concern, as opposed to an
objection, is that if one looks at the map handed out tonight, that portion of Del Valle
Parkway is anticipated to extend not just from California Street to Bernal as it does today,
but for that street to be extended to the intersection of First Street and Stanley Boulevard.
It is not normal for a street to come in, make a 90-degree mm at the intersection of
another street, and have another name; but we have a lot of those in town right now. He
said he doesn't want to rule that name out. He said it could certainly be looked at. Mr.
Beratlis was not aware that the street was intended to go through. That would be the only
reason why California Street would be a concern.

Ms. Michelotti said that was also her concern.

Ms. Swift said he felt sure that the City could find a street name that would satisfy
everyone concemed.

Ms. Dennis asked about the segment where Del Valle is supposed to go through
in the future. Would there be other streets within this section?

Mr. Swift said that the discussions do not include any streets in this connection
between Stanley and this new street. There is not a whole lot of depth in those lots. All
of the preliminary plans do not show any public streets that link the two areas. The
properties are small.

Ms. Dennis asked if the City would have to come up with a whole group of street
names that related to each other, around some theme.

Chris Beratlis, 351 C St. Mary Street, said that they concurred with the staff
report. He said they were unaware of the street going through to Stanley and concurred
that the group that he represents will sit down with staff and work out a new name to be
used for this section.

Ed Spencer, 880 Columbine Court, Danville, said that when he came into the
meeting tonight he picked up a map and said he saw that it said Caiifomia Street. He said
that he owns property on California Avenue, not Street, and it is on the curve where
Caiifomia comes into Del Valle Parkway. He said he represents the 10 tenants he has in
the building he owns. The ideal situation would be if California Avenue continued all the

Pleasanton City Council 23 04/17/01
Minutes
