funds to help fumish the facility. He said the Society already has miniatures of the adobe
and the milking barn for sale at the museum. He commended staff for its diligent work
and the project is as perfect as it can be historically.

Ms. Michelotti asked if the Society had discussed the silo being part of the barn.

Mr. Kinney said the Society had supported the silo, but had followed the public
hearings and understood the difficulties with the reproduction of the silo.

Jim Brennan, 3368 Prairie Drive, representing Foothill Knolls Homeowners
Association, indicated the Association supported the project but was concerned about
increased traffic on Foothill Road. He asked Council to keep that in mind and consider
further traffic mitigations.

Mayor Pico asked if he had brought this to the attention of the Traffic Committee.

Mr. Brennan said they had but was told the service levels were adequately
addressed. He said that may be true now, but he believed that was changing.

Brad Hirst, 1811 Santa Rita Road, representing Charles Austin, grandson of the
founder of Meadowlark dairy in 1919. The family is pleased with the plans for the park
He read a letter of support from Mr. Austin, a copy of which is attached to these Minutes.

Ms. Ayala asked about the silo.

Mr. Hirst said the Austins would prefer to have it, but recognized the reasons for
not building it.

Dolores Bengtson, 568 Hamilton Way, indicated she had been a part of the Alviso
Adobe Master Plan Task Force. This project has been a vision since 1989, when the
Laguna Oaks development designated the property for an historic park. She related the
various efforts to preserve the adobe up to the final master plan for the site. This is an
unusual opportunity to develop a resource for young and old to study and participate in
moments of history; i.e., moments when the valley was home to native Americans; when
the Californians introduced a new culture, constructed adobes and grazed cattle; and
when enterprising agriculturalists introduced dairy farming and produced certified milk
for the area. There are many lessons to be learned and applied to the future. She fully
supported the master plan. She also recommended efforts be made to complete funding
for the project as soon as possible. She urged the Council to elevate the priority of this
project in the Capital Improvement Program. The City has excellent sports, civic arts,
and human services programs and facilities. The completed Alviso Adobe Community
Park will provide a new dimension to the park system and will indicate to the citizens that
the City values and respects its past while it moves forward into the future.

Ms. Michelotti asked Ms. Bengtson to review the history of the discussions
regarding the silo.

Pleasanton City Council 8 01/23/01
Minutes
