Ms. Ayala said that she was not familiar with the monument sign that exists there.
The lady mentioned the position of it. Do they have flexibility of a new monument sign?

Mr. Swifi said they do have some, but the problem is when the City widens
Stanley Boulevard, then the street will essentially go right up to the property line and is
slightly higher than the property line. There is a little retaining wall right at the comer of
California and Stanley, so there is very little room between the parking lot and the back
of the sidewalk that is currently available for a sign. Your typical monument sign, if it
were going to be directly in front of Stanley Boulevard, would be 2 - 3 lbet between the
end of the parking lot and the sidewalk. There is more room right at the comer. That is
not where the existing sign is. The existing sign is on the south side of the entry drive as
you come from California Street into the complex. lt's a small directory sign 3 x 7 feet,
with individual tenant names. It is more of a directory, once people find it. The
difficulty is that the driveway is on California but the address is on Stanley, so it causes
confusion.

Ms. Ayala asked if they would be able to put a monument sign on the comer that
was more visible?

Mr. Swift said there is some existing landscaping within the public right of way.
He thought there is room there to do it. That's where they have identified for their sign
number 11 that they proposed. The Planning Conunission did not care whether the sign
was on the south side or the north side of the driveway. They wanted a single sign that
would incorporate a more dominant presence for Olde Towne Antiques as well as also
identify all of the other businesses that are in that complex.

Ms. Ayala asked if that is satisfactory?

Mr. Swift said that no, they want their own single Olde Towne Antique
monument sign, but still retain the existing directory sign for all of the other tenants.

Ms. Dennis asked with regard to the comments about the other signs existing for
Rynick Tires, are they governed by the same sign rules? Are they in compliance?

Mr. Swift said basically they have the san~e sign rules. Our zoning ordinance is
quite generous with respect to the maximum allowed signage, so virtually no business
comes anywhere near the total maximum that is allowed. He thinks that if we went out
and carefully looked at Rynick 'Fire, at what was there and what was approved at one
point in time, that would be a code enfomement job. That business in that building went
in before California Avenue went through. So it has peculiar signage that was trying to
be oriented towards Stanley at the time it was built. It had sort of new car dealer signage
and then as it changed into more of a service business. it simply changed the large signs
that were there for the auto dealer into service signs. That one is probably somewhat of a
special case.

Pleasmaon City Council 30 06/20/00
Minules
