Ms. Dennis asked how many businesses in that complex have Stanley Boulevard
addresses?

Mr. Swift said that all of them do. They all have 3440 Stanley Boulevard and
then a suite number a~.er that.

Ms. Michelotti asked about some of the samples that were shown in the pictures.
They showed other buildings in the same area, right along Stanley Boulevard, that had
slgnage on both the front and around the comer, on the side. She said she wondered if
them had been any precedent set. For instance, Aututron has a smaller sign on the east
elevation, as well as their signage in front. She asked if what they are saying is that all of
these other ones are really in conformance. She is not really looking for things out of
confom~ancc, but hasn't that kind of a precedent that has been set, if someone has been
allowed to have signage, although a little smaller. on the side elevation as well as on the
li'ont?

Mr. Swift said the geneml role is that buildings that are on comer lots typicaily
have signage on two sides, rather than just one. For instance, the new Winston Tire
building has signage on both sides of its building. He is not familiar with the one that
Ms. Michelottl is talking about, but he thinks that is also at a comer. Big O Tim has
asked for a sign on the side of its building but the Staff has said no. Ray' s Electric asked
for a sign on the back side of its building but Staff said no, do a monument sign instead.
They worked out a monument sign with all of the businesses them. It really depends on
the situation, but if a building is on a comer, it typically will have signage on both sides.

Mr. Pico asked about one of the letters from the applicants dated June 16tl' which
talks about the proposed signage being 194 square feet. Does that include the monument
signs?

Mr. Swig said that is his understanding. Staff feels what is allowed in the code
and what is proposed is not the issue. You could fill the whole front of this building with
signs and probably not go over what the code would allow if you get right down to the
actual definitions of what sign area is. He thinks what Staff recommends is appropriate
and adequate and hopefully very useful signage for the business. That is the way the
Planning Commission looked at it as well.

Mr. Pico asked what was the staff objection to the signs on the sides of the
building?

Mr. Swift said he believed that Staff feels that this particular building really has
an orientation directly onto Stanley, rather than the typical corner kind of configuration
and therefore the signs on the sides of the building were not necessary. You could see the
front signs at almost the stone time as you could see a sign on the side. That is certainly
tree on the east side of the building although it is less true on the west side.

Pleasanton CiW Cornrail 31 06/20/00
Minutes
