He believes that this shop is an asset to this area of Pleasanton and he asked Council to
consider the request tonight,

Mrs. Patricia I.overas, 1921 Oro Drive, Fremont, is also a par~ of Olde Towne
Antiques, She has her business there and has been in business for almost 20 years. The
reason she is here tonight is to stress the importance of signage to antique shops. When
you are driving from Pleasanton towards Livennore, if you cannot see the sign, you don't
know that there is an antique shop there. You can go right by it because they are situated
facing the center of the crossroads. They are not facing straight out. Drivers camrot see
the signs. This picture is very helpful because you can see the sign if there is not a track
parked in front of it, which sometimes there is. It is important that we have signs on that
side so when people are coming from Livermore and are waiting for the light, they can
see the signs, but have no access to that side. Mr. Cox described that the other building is
blocking the sign and it is important to have those signs in the front mid on the side to get
the people to see where they are. Otherwise they will drive by. She knows this, because
she has had friends who have come to visit the shops since she has moved there and they
say, "Pat, we went fight by it and had to go around and come back." This is okay,
because you make a U-tum and come back, but it isn't too conducive to keeping a
business open and busy if patrons and customers can't find you. it is important to have
signage. The best point for a sign is on that comer because there are other buildings that
come out ahead of ours and you don't see ours until you get a little further along.

Ms. Ayala asked if the monument sign would remedy that situation?

Ms. Loveras said that it would not. She said the monument sign that is there now,
customers only see it when they are on Califumia. But you don't see it that well from
Stanley. It would have to be raised up or pushed out toward Stanley Boulevard for it to
be seen by the people driving by. That is why it is so important to have that sign, because
they are retail, to get the people to see where they are. With 50 dealers in there, therc's
an obligation on the part of the owners, They feel that they want to be able to keep us;
we want to be able to keep our businesses alive and that is why it is so stressrid if wc
don't have good signage.

Thomas Hunsinger, 590 South N Street, Livermore, is an antique furniture dealer
in Olde Towne Antiques. He had a shop in Phoenix prior to moving back to Pleasanton
and he did have problems with signage. The first year of having his shop there, they
didn't want to allow basically any signage on the front of his building. It caused many
problems with selling the furniture. The thing that he really hoped would be taken into
consideration is the fact that some of us are spending tens of thousands of dollars a year
to put a product out here. They would like to have as much signage as possible to get
people.

'llqere being no further speakers. the public hearing was closed.

Ms, Dennis asked if this area is zoned commercial service and are retail uses
allowed in commercial service areas?

Pleasanton Ciiy Council 28 06/20/00
Minutes
