Mr. van Gelder said everything in this development is not standard. He pointed
out that the reason for the extended time for no parking is that the children do not all
leave school in the same fifteen minute period. With regard to the weekend, staff did
recommend the no parking areas only apply to the weekdays.

Mr. van Gelder indicated that if Coancil wants a school crossing, staff has to do
certain things; if a neighborhood crosswalk is chosen, then staff does not have to do
signage. It is up to Council to make a decision on how much warning for safety purposes
versus how much quality of life for the neighborhood.

Ms. Michelotti asked about development on the noah side of Cameron.

Mr. van Gelder stated there is one undeveloped section, but that is not in the area
currently being discussed. When that area develops, he did not think there would be
sidewalks and whatever decision is made for this area will apply to the new area as well.

Ms. Michelotti stated she had seen this area develop and the residents have tried
to keep it a special area, so she supported a compromise that does not jeopardize the
safety of the children and does not jeopardize the aesthetics of this community.

Mayor Tarver asked about a crossing guard.

Mr. van Gelder explained that staff had studied the area and it did not warrant a
crossing guard or all-way stop signs.

Mayor Tarver agreed that this neighborhood had tried to remain rural. He was
concemed about parking on a narrow street, which was designed to keep the country feel
and an open appearance. If parking is allowed, there will be cars parked at every hour
allowed. He felt pedestrians would walk on the street because of the cramped feeling
near the fence. He would like to preserve the rural character and not allow parking. He
felt the crosswalk could be less obtrusive and still provide safety for kids going to school

It was moved by Ms. Dennis, seconded by Ms. Michelotti, to continue this
matter for thirty days to allow further discussions with the neighborhood regarding
the crosswalk, signage and hours of parking.

The roll call vote was as follows:
AYES: Councilmembers - Ayala, Dennis, Michelotti and Mayor Tarver
NOES: None
ABSENT: Councilmember Pico
ABSTAIN: None

Ms. Dennis suggested a review of pennit parking options at the neighborhood
meeting.

Pleasanton City Council 9 01 / 18/00
Minutes
