The roll call vote was as follows:
AYES: Councilmembers - Ayala, Dennis, Pico, and Mayor Tarver
NOES: None
ABSENT: Councilmember Michelotti
ABSTAIN: None

Item 4p
PUD-89-14-1D-3M, Ellis & Ellis (IR 99:44)

Brian Swift presented the staff report.

Ms. Dennis felt that when someone drives down Bemal Avenue, that building is a
focal point and her concern is that sign is a major challenge to the character of the
downtown area, especially if it is lighted. She did not want an}' signs on the building or
just a small sign that is not lighted. Normally she would not have a problem, but this is a
special location and she believed people would be very upset if this sign were approved.

Diane Shoemaker. with J. Blake Building Designs. 830 Main Street, said the
proposed sign is brushed aluminum with back-lit channel letters on a brand new building.
She felt it was a fitting design for the building.

Mayor Tarver understood the design concepts, but believes there is a fine line
between broadcasting the name of a business and notifying the public of where a business
is located. People do need to know what is at that address and what is in the building. but
he thought the proposed sign would detract from the building. It will be very
predominant.

Ms. Shoemaker felt that contradicts the signage that has been approved in
Hacienda Business Park at PacBell, PeopleSoft, etc. This is a brand new building. not a
historical building.

Mayor Tarver did not disagree but pointed out that is a business park.

Sandra Hutson, 7567 Amador Valley Boulevard, Dublin. representing the
property owner, indicated they had been working with the Planning Department
regarding the design of the sign since July. She believed the PUD allows signage on the
first floor with no limit on the number of names on it. She is concerned about the rights
to signage that was given to tenants of the building. The owner wanted to provide
signage to the second floor tenant since it was the major occupant of the building. If the
second floor sign is not approved, what does she tell her ox~er?

Mayor Tarver said she can relate the comments and concerns of Council. The
applicant must provide a comprehensive sign program that will be reviewed and
approved based on a new submittal.

Pleasanton City Council
Minutes

12 10/05/99
