Mayor Brandes declared the public hearing open on the application and the <br />Negative Declaration. <br /> <br /> Mr. Arlo Jones, P. O. Box 5222, Walnut Creek, representing Longs Drug Stores, <br />presented reasons for requesting a General Plan amendment to allow Longs Drug <br />Stores to construct a store at the northeast corner of Valley Avenue and Santa <br />Rita Road. He stated that a survey had been taken at the Longs Drug Store in <br />Livermore regarding the number of Pleasanton residents shopping there who would <br />like to have a store in Pleasanton, and that over 1,000 signatures were received <br />representing all areas of the City of Pleasanton. Mr. Arlo stated the proposed <br />site was chosen because it was centrally located, had easy access and was near <br />existing businesses. Mr. Arlo presented two petitions signed by the business <br />community in favor of Longs Drug Stores locating at this corner. Mr. Arlo pre- <br />sented a scope of the specific project and surrounding area. <br /> <br /> Mr. Bernard C. Johnson, Traffic Engineering Consultant, presented a traffic <br />report stating that traffic would not be significantly increased~o cause any <br />adverse impact at the intersection of Valley Avenue and Santa Rita Road if Longs <br />Drug Store located there. <br /> <br /> Mr. Jones urged favorable consideration by Council on this application for a <br />General Plan amendment. <br /> <br /> The following persons spoke in favor of the application:. <br /> <br /> Bette DeSanti, merchant, 1987 Santa Rita Road, representing Mission <br /> Plaza merchants <br /> A. Robinson, 5489 San Antonio Street <br /> Donna Aladeen, 4179 Silver Street <br /> Buddy Tari, 3231 Vineyard Avenue <br /> Carl Britto, 5589 Black Avenue <br /> Yvan Albert, 7926 Hillsboro Court <br /> Frank Annella, Manager, Sears in Mission Plaza <br /> Mark Seeley, 560 Neal Street <br /> Aric Granville, 1987 Santa Rita Road, President, and representing <br /> Pleasanton Chamber of Commerce <br /> <br /> The following persons spoke in opposition to the application: <br /> <br /> Steve Palino, Attorney, 22300 Foothill Blvd., Ha~qard, representing <br /> Heritage Valley Homeowners Association <br /> Curt Grasso, 1961 Lightland Court, President of the Heritage Valley <br /> Homeowners Association, who presented a petition signed <br /> by 209 residents which read as follows: "We, the under- <br /> signed, wish to make it known that we are against a <br /> variance to the >~ster Plan, which would allow a Longs <br /> Drugstore, or any other commercial establishment, to be <br /> erected on the N.E. corner of the intersection of Santa <br /> Rita Road and Valley Avenue. This property is currently <br /> zoned Park and Residential. If this Variance is allowed <br /> we feel that the increased traffic and congestion which <br /> would result, would cause an extreme health and safety <br /> hazard." <br /> <br /> 4. 4/24/78 <br /> <br /> <br />
