Commis-
sion at their Regular Meeting of 3-14-79
Mr. Harris presented his report dated March 15, 1979, regarding this matter.
No Council action was required or taken on this item.

REPORTS OF THE CITY MANAGER
Railroad Track Consolidation Pro]ect
Mayor Brandes stated that Councilmember' Wood would not participate in this
item due to a potential Conflict of Interest.

Mayor Brandes presented the following petitions and correspondence related
to the railroad track consolidation project:

1. Petition signed by 71 residents which read as follows:

"We the undersigned, support the conversion of the Southern Railroad
,
services on to the Western Pacific track. The discontinued use of the
Southern Pacific track located parallel to First Street, would take
away the dividing line between the downtown core area and community
residence development. The cost of conversion to Western Pacific
tracks located parallel to Pleasanton Avenue (next to the Fairgrounds)
would also be less expensive. We feel rail traffic on the Western
Pacific tracks would be of greater benefit to the entire community
of Pleasanton rather than serve a small interest group if conversion
takes place on to the Southern Pacific tracks. The Pleasanton Down-
town Merchants Association and the Pleasanton Chamber of Commerce as
well as other citizens of Pleasanton urge and strongly support the
City Council to vote in favor of consolidation of the Southern Pacific
Railroad on to the Western Pacific Tracks."

2. Petition signed by 68 residents which read as follows:

"We, the undersigned, believe that extension of the Del Valle Parkway
through to Santa Rita Road will greatly reduce present traffic loads
on St. Mary's and Division Streets and Pleasanton Avenue thus en-
hancing safety in these residential neighborhoods."

3. Petition signed by 110 residents which read as follows:

"We, the undersigned, support relocatfon of the Southern Pacific
tracks so as to combine them with the existing Western Pacific tracks
through Pleasanton because we believe it to be much less expensive,
more consistent with public safety and elimination of at-grade rail-
road crossing and traffic congestion and a more feasible solution
than combining the Western Pacific tracks with Southern Pacific
tracks or than doing nothing at all."

4. Letter from William G. Kovac, 3124 Weymouth Court, regarding possible in-
crease in train traffic.

4. 3/29/79
