Open from 1-12-82 and 1-26-82)
Mr. Harris presented his report (SR 82:26) dated January 18, 1982, regarding this
matter.

Mayor Mercer declared the continued public hearing open on this item.

Mr. Terry Long, representing Wild West Stores and Electrical Products Corpora-
tion, stated the store uses a lot of advertising in television and newspapers, and
he feels the sign at the rear of the building is necessary to identify this place
of business. He stated he felt the letter attached to the staff report from The
Taubman Company was incorrect; advising that a previous letter to Wild West Stores
had given permission for the rear sign to be erected. He stated he felt his appeal
was in order and should be granted.

Mr. Harris advised that Council could allow any kind of signing in the C-R Dis-
trict that they wanted to, but that the Design Review Board felt that only the Best
Store should be allowed to have a sign at the rear of their building since they are
the anchor tenant and the largest store. Mr. Harris stated that in his opinion it
is Mr. Eynck's feeling that The Taubman Company is not in favor of any further sign-
ing at the rear of stores.

Mr. Don Orfela, retail businessman, stated he felt it is important for discrete
signing for the overall appearance of the community. He stated that allowing this
sign will invite other similar signing. He advised he felt the City should adhere
to the sign ordinance and maintain the integrity of a nice look for the community.

There being no further testimony, Mayor Mercer declared the public hearing closed
on this item.

After discussion, it was moved by Councilmember Kephart, and seconded by Council-
member Wood, that Resolution No. 82-65, denying the appeal of Wild West Stores of a
decision of the Design Review Board denying their application for a second wall sign
on their store in the Best Plaza Shopping Center located at the northeast corner of
Stoneridge Drive and Springdale Avenue, be adopted.
The roll call vote was as follows:
AYES: Councilmembers Butler, Kephart, Mohr, Wood, and Mayor Mercer
NOES: None
ABSENT: None

6. 2/23/82
