He feels that people would <br /> focus on the internal illuminated signs in the darkness. He stated they felt they <br /> should have some internal illumination otherwise the business would be lost in the <br /> night hours. He advised they had directed their design staff to not do anything <br /> overbearing, compared to the area, and think the design proposed is a modest approach. <br /> It necessary they would be willing to have less signage, with some illumination, so <br /> they can operate successfully. <br /> <br /> Staff indicated that the signing program at present is for the non-illuminated <br /> wooden signs on the front. The building when it was built was oriented only to <br /> Hopyard Road; now that Owens Drive and Old Hopyard Road have been realigned and the <br /> property owners have picked up additional property to the east, they intend to build <br /> another small building to the east of this building. The owners should think about <br /> reorienting the use of double frontages and a new overall signing program for the <br /> building. <br /> <br /> The owner of the E1 ChappaPal Restaurant stated that he also needs signs to let <br /> people know he is there. He hopes that the City would, in the near future, change <br /> their signing rules. He stated that people come in and ask why they don't have <br /> illuminated signs, it is hard to see the businesses in this location. <br /> <br /> There being no further testimony, Mayor Mercer declared the public hearing closed <br /> on this item. <br /> <br /> After discussion, it was moved by Councilmember Butler, and seconded by Council- <br />member Brandes, that Resolution No. 84-347, partially approving the appeal of Nation's <br />Foodservice, Inc., of a condition by the Design Review Board approving a signing pro- <br />gram for the Nation's restaurant proposed to be operated in the commercial building <br />located at 4321-K Hopyard Road, to allow Nation to internally illuminate their logo <br />on the front and side of building, eliminating any signage on the back, and leaving <br />NationTs non-illuminated, be adopted. <br />The roll call vote was as follows: <br />AYES: Councilmembers Brandes, Butler, and Mohr <br />NOES: Councilmember Wood and Mayor Mercer <br />ABSENT: None <br /> <br />Pursuant to Section 8320 et seq. of the Streets and Highways Code of California, the <br />City Council hereby declares its intention to vacate a portion of Oakland Avenue un- <br />necessary for present or prpspective public use, said portion being a sixty (60) foot <br />wide strip running from Mohr Avenue north approximately 643..98 feet~ but retainin~ a <br />thirty foot public service easement over the westerly half of said parcel more par- <br />ticularly described on maps on file with the Engineering Division of the City of <br />Pleasanton <br /> Mr. Swift presented his report (SR 84:372) dated July 5, 1984, regarding this <br />matter. <br /> <br /> Mayor Mercer declared the public hearing open on this item. <br /> <br /> Mr. Ed Lamb, 2133 Alexander Way, stated that he does not understand the closing <br />of this road.
