new roads, more land can be used at this site, and it is more accessible by <br />the elderly. He stated it is also important to look at this site not just for <br />today but for the future; many activities will be taking place around the <br />Civic Center. He felt it is far more advantageous to locate the new library <br />building at the Civic Center complex. He stated that traffic considerations <br />are also a major factor-. <br /> <br /> Councilmember Butler stated he agrees with Councilmember Brandes. He <br />stated that the other two alternate sites have long had other uses planned. <br />He stated it is important to recognize that a main library is a major public <br />building; he would look forward to the time when there will be branch <br />libraries. A main branch library belongs at the Civic Center and it is ap- <br />propriate that the new library be at that location. He advised that the <br />population is shifting and that before long the Civic Center will be close to <br />the geographical center'of the City. <br /> <br /> Councilmember Mohr stated that with improved streets and a new bus system, <br />she felt the Civic Center site would be more accessible to the public. She <br />stated that with respect to it availability to schools, Pleasanton School is <br />expected to be reopened soon. She advised she does not have a problem sup- <br />porting the Civic Center site for the ne, library. <br /> <br /> Mayor Mercer instructed staff to prepare a report regarding site improve- <br />ments as they relate to bike trail system for the new library. <br /> <br /> It was moved by Councilmember Brandes, and seconded by Councilmember But- <br />ler, that Resolution No. 85-470, determining that the new library building <br />will be located in the Civic Center complex, be adopted. <br />The roll call vote was as follows: <br />AYES: Councilmembers Brandes, Butler, Mohr, and Mayor Mercer <br />NOES: None <br />ABSENT: Councilmember Wood <br /> <br /> Councilmember Brandes advised that he had met recently with residents near <br />the Del Valle Parkway and other interested citizens regarding the Del Valle <br />Parkway, and that he would be reporting back to Council regarding comments and <br />concerns that need to be addressed by Councilmembers. <br /> <br />MEETING OPEN TO THE PUBLIC <br /> Mr. Curt Altschul, 6324 Calle Altamira, presented a letter signed by ten <br />residents, requesting the installation of a stop sign on Paseo Santa Cruz at <br />Calle Altamira. He stated there is a problem with speeding vehicles and of <br />vehicles cutting the corner when turning southbound onto Calle Altamira from <br />westbound Paseo Santa Cruz. He stated this creates a dangerous situation for <br />school children as well as drivers in this area. He asked Council to instruct <br />staff to install a stop sign at this location. After discussion, Mayor Mercer <br />referred this matter to the Traffic Committee for review and recommendation. <br />He also instructed the Police Department to do increased observation and en- <br />forcement at this intersection. <br /> <br /> Mr. Michael Goldsworthy, 633 Abbie Street, requested Council's assistance <br />regarding a problem with Cork Harbour. He stated that Cork Harbour had until <br />October 1st to meet certain requirements of their development. He advised <br />they have not done any of their improvements, therefore the homeowners have <br />not been able to meet their commitments regarding this matter.
