He stated that all schools support the proposals. He stated <br /> that good schools are a major indicator of the quality of life in a community, <br /> and he urged Council to work with the School District and developers for a <br />{"" positive solution to the school problems. <br /> <br /> Senior Citizen Housing <br /> Mayor Brandes stated that the senior citizens of Pleasanton will not be <br /> overlooked. He advised that a citizens committee has been diligently working <br /> on this aspect of our community needs. <br /> <br /> Mr. Bill Herlihy, 816 Abbie, Chairman of the Senior Citizens project, <br /> stated he supports Measure B. He reviewed the need for a senior center in <br /> conjunction with the proposed senior citizen housing project. He requested <br /> that staff be authorized to proceed with hiring an architect for the senior <br /> center in order that this project can be coordinated with the housing project. <br /> He stated that an architect is necessary in order to determine the cost of a <br /> senior center. He requested this action be taken as soon as possible. <br /> <br /> Mayor Brandes emphasized that all the proposed allocations will depend on <br /> the passage of Measure B at the Special Election on April 8, 1986,. and on the <br /> actual receipt of the Proposition 4 surplus funds. <br /> <br /> Councilmember Mercer stated that Pleasanton is not its library or schools; <br /> Pleasanton is its people. He stated the City is in a fortunate position of <br /> possibly having surplus money to better the community and making it an even <br /> better place to live. He stated the allocation to schools is the only exact <br /> dollar figure the Council has to work with, and he supports this funding. <br /> <br /> Councilmember Butler stated this will be a challenge to the School Boards, <br /> and he would expect some answers from the School District as to how they will <br /> actually fund any new schools, the possible sale of real estate to the City, <br /> and the justification that a new school is necessary versus the rehabilitation <br /> of an already existing unused elementary school. <br /> <br /> It was moved by Councilmember Mercer, and seconded by Councilmember Wood, <br /> that Resolution No. 86-108, committing $4,000,000 of surplus Proposition 4 <br /> funds to the Pleasanton School District for the construction of an intermedi- <br /> ate school, be adopted. <br /> The roll call vote was as follows: <br /> AYES: Councilmembers Butler, Mercer, Mohr, Wood, and Mayor Brandes <br /> NOES: None <br /> ABSENT: None <br /> <br /> It was moved by Councilmember Mercer, and seconded by Councilmember But- <br /> ler, that the City Manager be instructed to prepare a report and recommenda- <br /> tion for the hiring of an architect for the senior center project <br /> The roll call vote was as follows: <br /> AYES: Councilmembers Butler, Mercer, Mohr, Wood, and Mayor Brandes <br /> NOES: NOne <br /> ABSENT: None <br /> <br /> Mayor Brandes thanked all the citizens in attendace at tonight's meeting <br /> for their participation in these vital issues of the community. <br /> <br /> - 8 - 3-18-86 <br /> <br /> <br />
