He stated the detour signs are confusing and causing <br />businesses in the south end of town to suffer. <br /> <br /> Ms. Doris Polaski, owner of the Golden Oak, stated she is concerned the <br />detour signs will isolate the businesses in the Downtown Center; she requested <br />a different type of wording on the signs to indicate they are open for <br />business. <br /> <br /> Mayor Mercer instructed staff to work with the merchants to come up with a <br />reasonable solution to the detour signage problem. <br /> <br />PUBLIC HEARINGS <br />PG&E Program to Remove Selected Trees Creating a Problem with Overhead Power <br />Lines in the Pleasanton Valley, Black Avenue Area, and Replace with a <br />Desirable Street Tree Species <br /> Mr. Walker presented the report of the Director of Parks and Community <br />Services (SR 87:236) dated May 19, 1987, regarding this matter. <br /> <br /> Mayor Mercer declared the public hearing open on this item. <br /> <br /> Mr. Rick Fetro, Marketing Representative in Pleasanton for PG&E, stated <br />stated PG&E representatives and City staff met with affected residents on May <br />11, 1987, to review the program, which he added is strictly voluntary. He <br />stated PG&E canvassed 25 homes in the the Black Avenue area last week; 12 were <br />in favor of the program, 12 opposed, and 1 undecided. He stated he concurred <br />with staff recommendations as presented in the report. <br /> <br /> The following persons spoke in opposition to the PG&E tree removal <br />program: <br /> <br /> Ms. Harteveld, 1757 Greenwood Road <br /> Ms. Arlene Gillespie, 4645 Black Avenue <br /> Mr. Jeff Wood, 4763 Golden Road <br /> Ms. tinda Devita, 4642 Black Avenue <br /> <br /> The following person spoke in favor of the tree removal program: <br /> <br /> Ms. Gladys Pearson, 1656 Orchard Way <br /> <br /> There being no further testimony, Mayor Mercer declared the public hearing <br />closed on this matter. <br /> <br /> Council discussion ensued regarding the removal of heritage trees on one <br />side of Black Avenue only, the uniqueness of this street, the sidewalk repair <br />program, and options available to residents on this street regarding their <br />trees. <br /> <br /> It was moved by Councilmember Brandes, and seconded by Councilmember Wil- <br />son, that the PG&E program to remove selected trees creating a problem with <br />overhead power lines in the Pleasanton Valley and Black Avenue area, be <br />rejected. <br />The roll call vote was as follows: <br />AYES: Councilmembers Brandes, Wilson, and Mayor Mercer <br />NOES: Councilmembers Butler and Mohr <br />ABSENT: None <br /> <br /> 5 - 5-19-87 <br /> <br /> <br />
