255 <br /> <br />REPORTS OF THE CITY MANAGER <br />item 12a <br />Approval of Service Contract with Alameda County Library System <br />to Operate the Pleasanton Library <br /> Mr. Walker presented his report (SR 88:482) dated October 18, <br />1988, regarding this matter. <br /> <br /> Mayor Mercer stated the sign would be discussed at this <br />time. <br /> <br /> Ms. Joy Robinson, member of the Pleasanton Library <br />Commission, stated the Library Commission met in Special Session <br />to look at an exhibit of the new library sign. In addition to <br />approval of the design, the Commission recommended that the words <br />"Alameda County Library" be added to the sign. She stated that <br />Alameda County Library is proud to be a part of this new library <br />and feel it will benefit the community knowing this information, <br /> <br /> Mayor Mercer stated he personally did not feel this wording <br />should be on the sign, but would defer to the Commission on this <br />point. <br /> It was moved by Councilmember Butler, and seconded by <br />Councilmember Butler, to add the words "Alameda County Library" to <br />the Pleasanton library sign. <br />The roll call vote was as follows: <br />AYES: Councilmembers Brandes, Butler, Wilson, and Mayor <br /> Mercer <br />NOES: None <br />ABSENT: Councilmember Mohr <br /> <br /> Mayor Mercer stated that consideration of the meeting room <br />would be discussed at this time. <br /> <br /> Mr. Fred Lewis, Chairman of the Pleasanton Library <br />Commission, presented his letter stating the Commission strongly <br />and unanimously recommends that the meeting space be managed by <br />the Library and reserved at the local Pleasanton Library in <br />accordance with the policies and procedures developed by the <br />Alameda County Library. He stated that based on precedent, the <br />Library should manage the meeting space, and also that those who <br />want to reserve the meeting space will expect to do so at the <br />Library. <br /> <br /> Ms. Marietta Geis, representing the Library League on the <br />Library Commission, stated the meeting room is a part of the <br />library as a whole. She advised that other cities provide the <br />building and then contract with Alameda County Library to operate <br />their buildings. She felt this is the best way to run a library. <br /> <br /> Mr. Stanley Rathbone, 325 Ray Street, stated the new library <br />will be inconvenient to people in the northern section of town; he <br />suggested keeping the old Library building and use it for a branch <br />library. <br /> - 15 - <br /> <br /> 10-18-88 <br /> <br /> <br />
