He added that errors were made <br />in the past but that should not reflect upon Jackie Shenave and <br />her right to operate a cardroom. <br /> <br /> Ms. Jackie Shenave, owner of the Pastime Pool, presented a <br />petition signed by 22 business people in the downtown area, which <br />read as follows: <br /> <br /> "We, the undersigned, Merchants of Downtown Pleasanton, <br /> petition the City Council of Pleasanton to restore to <br /> the Pastime the right to conduct business in their <br /> normal manner." <br /> <br /> Ms. Shenave presented another petition, signed by 243 <br />concerned people, which read as follows: <br /> <br /> "We, the undersigned citizens of Pleasanton, call upon <br /> the city council members to vacate the order of <br /> revocation against the Pastime Pool cardroom located at <br /> 511 Main Street, Pleasanton. <br /> <br /> "We recognize the reason for the action was involving a <br /> former owner/partner's violation of the law, committed <br /> away from the licensed premises. <br /> <br /> "We feel to deprive the innocent current owner/partners <br /> (Frank & Jackie Shenave) their livelihood: as well, to <br /> deprive those who patronize the Pastime of their <br /> individual liberties is a serious infringement. <br /> <br /> "Accordingly, we hereby petition the city council to <br /> render judgement in favor of reinstating the cardroom <br /> license and ask they support small business owners Frank <br /> & Jackie Shenave their effort to keep alive a part of <br /> Pleasanton's heritage." <br /> <br /> Ms. Mary Murphy, Rose Avenue, stated all the people in the <br />audience are here in support of Jackie Shenave (approximately 80 <br />people). She felt there had been personal attacks on the Pastime <br />which were not warranted. <br /> <br /> Mr. Steve Simmons, Del Valle Parkway, stated he felt getting <br />rid of the ordinance is an attack on the cardroom and a way to get <br />rid of the Pastime, which he did not feel was right. <br /> <br /> Mr. William Jiro, 5989 Corte Espada, asked why the City <br />wanted to get rid of the cardroom when it has raised the permit <br />fees. <br /> <br /> Mr. Bethel Hume stated he has been going to the cardroom for <br />twenty years and during that time has never noticed any unlawful <br />activity that required calling the police department; the Pastime <br />is run in a commendable way. <br /> - 17 - <br /> <br /> 10-4-88 <br /> <br /> <br />
