He stated there is a broad base for that
particular club in that particular place. He stated it is
important that City Council represent these citizens as well as
the people who have money. He advised there are no more drugs in
this area than other places in Pleasanton; drugs are society's
problem. He concluded by stating the people who go to the Pastime
have a need met.

Mr. Leo Heckathorn, 4202 Stanley Boulevard, stated he would
like to see the cardroom stay; it has been here since 1928 and
should be preserved. He advised that people from other businesses
use the Pastime parking lot.

Mr. V. Yamamoto, Livermore Saloon, a bar and card room,
stated that if gambling is not allowed legally it will be done
illegally. He cited many different types of gambling; stating the
only problem with cardrooms is that they are visible. He stated
the basic advantage of cardrooms is that games of cards are more
sociable; the higher risk games are less sociable. He did not
feel the elimination of a cardroom will solve any problems and
will increase the potential for illegal games. He stated people
gamble because they lack purpose; cardrooms give a person a half-
way house and fill an emotional void.

Mr. Sam Platkin, 526 San Gabriel, stated Council should
respect other people's right to gamble and not infringe on the
rights of a minority; they should not do away with an
establishment because it annoys someone else. He has gone to the
Pastime many times and never had any trouble; there is more
trouble at the high school. The Pastime is a controlled
environment and Jackie Shenave had obeyed the law.

Mr. Thurman Caudill, Augustine Street, stated he first went
to the Pastime in 1942; at that time it was a good place to feel
welcome and have fun. He stated he would like to see the Pastime
remain and the ordinance should allow the cardroom to remain.

Mr. Charles Murphy stated the ordinance seems to say cards
are being singled out but other forms of gambling are allowed.
