He requested Council to <br /> deny the project and look for a more appropriate place for the <br /> facility. <br /> <br /> Mr. Sylvester de Fazio, 3711 Mohr Avenue, indicated that he <br /> was not opposed to the care center but that it was too dense for <br /> the site. <br /> <br /> Mr. Glenn Hewlett, 2201 Martin Avenue, stated that he would <br /> not be directly affected by the project; however, the entire Mohr- <br />O9 Martin area is funnelled through the Mohr corridor to Santa Rita <br />~ Road. He expressed concern about the safety of the children who <br /> use Mohr Avenue to go to school with seniors driving along the <br />< road. <br />Z Mr. Shutts explained that the residents of the facility would <br /> not be the type who would take long walks or be involved in outside <br /> athletic activities. They are in the facility precisely because <br /> they are no longer capable of doing the normal day to day routine <br /> on their own. With respect to density, he stated that the traffic <br /> study done by TKJM indicates that 150 trips per day is equivalent <br /> to 2% of the total traffic volume on Mohr Avenue. He added that he <br /> could not understand why the residents did not want the most <br /> dangerous stretch on Mohr Avenue widened. He mentioned that he <br /> offered to meet with Mr. Sharp after the Planning Commission <br /> meeting but that Mr. Sharp would not discuss anything short of a <br /> reduction to 35 rooms. He pointed out that it is not easy to find <br /> 70 people who are willing to share a room and that the project was <br /> not inappropriate for the site. <br /> <br /> Ms. Mohr asked Mr. Shutts what percentage of typical senior <br /> residents would have the strength to go outside the building if <br /> they so chose, and if Ms. Ku would have any objections to <br /> restricting residents from having cars. <br /> <br /> Mr. Shutts replied that less than ten percent of the residents <br /> would be able to go to Mission Plaza on their own. He added that <br /> since visits outside the facility are generally supervised, Ms. Ku <br /> would have no objection to restricting resident vehicles. <br /> <br /> Ms. Mohr stated that eight years ago, a market study for a <br /> proposed 120-room senior care facility which never materialized <br /> indicated that the need for this type of facility was four times <br /> the capacity of the proposed facility. He asked Mr. Shutts if a <br /> market study was done for this project and if there would be any <br /> reason that a similar facility which the City may build in the <br /> future would draw from his clientele. <br /> <br /> - 13 - <br /> 11-20-90 <br /> <br /> <br />
