He pointed
out that there is an imbalance of aquatic and recreational
facilities between the east and the west sides of Pleasanton, which
is important to the younger and older population who do not have
equal access because of transportation requirements.

Mr. Thorne continued that the Park and Recreation Commission
has recommended that a swimming facility in Foothill High School
would solve the City's competitive needs and relieve the severe
overcrowding conditions at the Aquatic Center while allowing for
the extension of the City's recreational program. He pointed out
that the School District is willing to provide the site and allow
public use of the facility during off school hours. He urged the
Council to reconsider the CIP budget and elevate the priority of
the swimming facility so it can be constructed as soon as funds
become available.

Ms. Charlene Johnson, 3575 Olympic Court South, a Pleasanton
resident for 15 years and the mother of three children who have
participated fn the sports programs, stated that the City has made
accommodations for soccer, baseball, adult softball, and youth
football at the Sports Park, tennis courts on Hopyard Road, and a
new gymnasium at the Pleasanton Middle School. She supported
Mr. Thorne's proposal to build a swimming facility in Foothill High
School.

Mr. David Huston, 2187 Goldcrest Circle, indicated that he has
been swimming for 11 years at Amador High School but that he has to
go elsewhere for the long course. He stated that swimming courses
have been referred to other cities because there is no facility in
Pleasanton that could accommodate those courses.

Ms. Arline Beardsley, 6365 Paseo Santa Maria, a member of the
Pleasanton Seahawks, stated that the swimming pool complex would
ensure that all Pleasanton children will receive qualified aquatic
instructions. She added that the pool would provide opportunities
for competitive sports like water polo, synchronized swimming, and
diving and would balance the aquatic needs on the west side of
Pleasanton. She urged the Council to support the construction of
the 50-meter by 25-yard long course pool at Foothill High School.

There being no further testimony, Mr. Mercer declared the
public hearing closed.

Mr. Mercer congratulated the Swimming Pool Task Force for an
excellent job in formulating and presenting arguments on the
importance of a swimming pool.
